  Cambridge was a regional (宗教的) center for more than 1000 years before the university was set up. The town began when the Romans built a camp on a small hill beside the River Cam, which they called the Granta. By the 5th century it had become a Saxon market town. In the 9th, it was a Danish army base and in the 11th, a Norman military base. It was not until the 13th century that the first students appeared (出現(xiàn))--and with them Cambridge took on the character which still exists (存在) today. The university is the heart of Cambridge. Its colleges, churches and museums cover much of the city center. Even the industry which has expanded (擴(kuò)展) the outer city into a modem center because of the university. Printing and science-based trades such as instrument making and electronics are among the largest employers.
