Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next to ours was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there and whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing (縫紉) and reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “Why doesn’t that woman clean her window? It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my apartment, including cleaning the window.
Late in the afternoon I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly seen. Her window was clean!

Here's an interview to a pilot about his life.

(R=Reporter; P= Pilot)

R: How much time do pilots actually spend flying a plane?

P: It varies (WES'J) from about 20 minutes on some domestic (區(qū)別) flights to as much as 18 hours on international flights. It all depends on if the flight is a short- or long-haul flight.

R: Do pilots take breaks during flights or do they fly the whole time?

P: Yes, we take breaks during long-haul flights. Airlines assign (指派) three or four pilots to long flights. We take turns flying the plane.

R: If pilots are traveling all the time, how do they deal with jet lag (時差)?

P: Jet lag is annoying for almost all pilots. I try to go to sleep as I would at home.

R: How important is it to know the weight and size of the plane you are flying?

P: It is very important. We weigh almost everything put into the airplane and make estimates (估計) according to the number of people on each flight.

R: Do pilots eat the airplane food?

P: Yes, we eat business class food! Airplane food changes every season and is very delicious if you don't hate eating lobster (龍蝦) every day! The pilots on the same plane are supposed to make different meal choices so that if one of the dishes causes food poisoning, only one of them will be sick. 3.What's the Chinese meaning of the word "poisoning" in the passage?

Helen

My best friend has suddenly turned her back on me and I don’t know why! Last week we phoned each other every day and e-mailed too, and over the weekend we went shopping together and she was fine. But at school on Monday morning she didn’t look at me or speak to me. I don’t know what I’ve done. She now spends all her time with another group of friends.

I have a really bad habit of chewing(嚼)the ends of my hair. I try to stop, but I can’t! My mom is starting to get really angry about it. Have you got any ideas?

Advice

Hi _________,

Why should your parents do all the washing-up? You should help around the house—it’s only fair. I don’t think you should change your looks though. Young people should look like young people.

②Hi_________,

Wearing your hair pulled back in a ponytail(馬尾辮)will help keep it out of your mouth. When you feel like chewing something, try bubble gum(泡泡糖). Give yourself time and you should be able to break this habit. The first few days are usually the hardest. Good luck!

③Hi ________,

Don’t worry about it so much! Phone your friend up as usual and she won’t be able to refuse you. I am sure you will get along well with each other. Everything will be fine.
