Tokyo, March 11, 2011

People left their houses near Sendai, northern Japan on March 11th.
A man and child look out over destroyed homes after a tsunami(海嘯) and earthquake.
Nuclear crises(核危機) in Japan’s power plants(核電站).

Could it have been worse?
More than a minute before the earth under their feet began to shake, many millions of Japanese people got cell phone alerts; TV networks interrupted (打斷,中斷) their broadcasts and turned to the latest announcement of Japanese government; loud speakers started suddenly to warn people of the coming tsunami; bullet trains came to a stop. The earthquake on March 11 was the first test of the nation’s earthquake early-warning technology (地震預警技術(shù)). However, in the fight of Man vs Nature, Nature won again. Hundreds, if not thousands of people, lost their lives in Japan. Scientists believe it is the fifth-strongest quake in the world since 1900 and the most powerful on record ever to hit Japan.
Lin tells of calm survivors

Sure, it’s hard to see uncertainty in such positive(積極的)light when you’re out of work, or when you feel like you’re failing. But uncertainty is really another word for chance.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had chances all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨詢), but she knew she wouldn’t stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income(收入)by teaching students. Still, she didn’t think she wanted to go to graduate school. Allison knew she wasn’t doing what she wanted, but she didn’t know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or starting their own businesses. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out. Allison realized that she spent her years finding her way: time well spent, and time we must all take if we’re being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainty and make a choice. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Open today’s newspaper. What do you see? Ads! Look through a magazine. More Ads! Turn on TV, still more ads! Everywhere you look, someone has something to tell. Here are some ways ads get us to buy.
Some ads use famous people. Stars are paid to sell a product. Think about it. Do they really know about medicine? Do they know about soft drink? These people may be famous. But they may not know about what they are selling.
Some ads make you think you’re getting the word of an expert. They say, “Doctor said.” A man in a white coat comes on TV. He looks nice. “I use bright and white,” He says. This man looks like a doctor. But he is an actor. He has been paid to sell this product.
Does soap have anything to do with a pretty child? Not much. But ads may show their product with something nice such as the sun, the flowers and so on. Such an ad is about feelings rather than facts.
Ads are full of strong words, and words like “new” and “improved” have power. They can help a produce sell. The soap may be called “Spring Rain”. A car may be called “Tiger”. Strong words work on our feelings.
Some ads make promise. But can they keep them? No.
Some ads use our fear of being too late. “Buy now!” They say, “Selling ends soon.” Check to see if this is true. Don’t hurry. Take time to think.
All ads hope we will buy something, do something, or think in a certain way. Know what ads are doing. Ask questions to yourself. Don’t let their words and pictures fool you.
