A new study warns that about 30% of the world people may not have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International (PAI) did the new study. It says more than three hundred and thirty-five million people lack enough water now. These people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.

PAI researchers Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three thousand million people may face water problems. At least 18 more countries are expected to lack enough water. The need for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount(數(shù)量) of water on the earth stays the same.

The report says lack of water in the future may cause several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also lead to more international conflict(沖突). Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would influence the ability to improve their economies(經(jīng)濟(jì)). This is because new industries often need a great amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One

way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water for agriculture.

The report also says a long-term solution to the water problem is to control population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題?

Kitty O’Neil

Twelve - year - old Kitty O’Neil tapped her coach on the arm. “Let me try”, she said. She was already on the swim team, but this was different. One of the divers had not shown up, and Kitty wanted to help out. Her coach looked down at her.

She had been practicing dives, but could she really stand up to the competition?Besides, she was completely deaf. Hearing and balance go together. Many people thought a person who was deaf wouldn’t be able to dive well. However, Kitty did, and she won the first place at that swimming meet and went on to win the Junior Olympics in her district.

Kitty began diving with Dr. Sammy Lee, a famous coach and former Olympic diving champion. The teenager went to school in the morning and then spent most afternoons diving. It was hard work, and Kitty often hit the water the wrong way. However, she was somehow able to keep practicing. In her diving career Kitty won many blue ribbons and gold medals, but she wanted more. Perhaps she learned determination from her mother. Kitty lost her hearing at the age of four months. Because she wanted Kitty to lead a normal life, Kitty’s mother went to college to learn about teaching people who are deaf. At last Kitty’s mother started a school for those who are deaf.

Kitty’s life was anything but normal, and as an athlete, Kitty was much older than others. When

she gave up diving, she wanted danger and adventure. She raced cars, boats, and motorcycles.

In 1971 she met a motorcycle racer named Duffy Humble ton. Friendship grew between them, and they were married within a year. Kitty settled into the marriage as Duffy continued his job for movies and television. Kitty became bored. Finally, she suggested that Duffy train her to do stunts. She was so brave and strong that everyone enjoyed her stunts. Soon this 97 - pound woman was dangling from cliffs, falling out of windows, and flipping cars. She became one of the busiest stunt women in Hollywood. In 1976 Kitty O’Neil also became the fastest woman in the world in rocket - powered car that went more than 512 miles per hour.

1.How old was Kitty when she won the first champion?

2.Who was Kitty’s first coach?

3.When did Kitty lose her hearing?

4.What did Kitty do when she gave up diving?

5.Why was Kitty able to become one of the busiest stunt women in Hollywood?
