Dear Alice,

I just received your letter. And I was very surprised to know that you decided to drop out of school and wanted to be a model(模特).

Being a model for a living is not easy. In fact, a famous person like me has a lot of problems that you couldn't see. I can't eat what I like, even though I'm very hungry. Keeping thin makes me look more beautiful on the stage because no one would like to see a heavy model.

Besides, I have to wear a heavy coat in the hot sun, in a swimming suit in the cold air. And practicing walking nicely every day is tiring for me.

You might say I made much money from modeling. Bus my dear niece (侄女), you have to know that money is, nothing, knowledge is everything. School is important and everyone should go to school for a certain period of time. The longer they stay at school, the better they will be. Very often, I hope I can give up my job and continue my studies at school. But it is very difficult for me to go back to school again. I am too old to go back to school now.

You are a pretty young girl with a bright future. You only have one year to finish your studies in high school. A year is really short. Please do consider my words carefully before you decide. Of course, there is only one thing I care about, and that is your happiness.

Love,

Emma

Our voice gives away a lot of information about ourselves. It can tell us our gender(性別)and age. And now, scientists say that it can also tell us our height.

Scientists at Washington University, Indiana University and University of California found that listeners could accurately tell the height of speakers, just by their voices. And the key to this mystery is a sound known as the subglottal resonance(聲門下共振). It deepens with height and helps us build a mental picture of a person.

“The best way to think about subglottal resonances is to imagine blowing into a glass bottle with water. The less water in the bottle, the lower sound,” said John Morton, a scientist at Washington University. And it’s the same for humans. The frequency of the subglottal resonance depends on the height. The taller we are, the deeper the resonance frequency is.

In order to find out whether people could identify the resonance, scientists did experiments. A number of same-sex pairs of different heights were told to read the same sentence aloud. It was played back to listeners who had to choose which one of the pairs was taller. Then, other listeners had to rank the speakers from the shortest to the tallest. The listeners were able to identify the tall people 62.17% of time, much higher than a lucky guess.

Why not try the experiment yourself? Find out if your tall friends have deeper voices.

Only children are happier than those with brothers or sisters, according to a new research which shows sibling rivalry (競爭) can have a serious effect on a child’s emotion.

Over half of the children surveyed said they had been bullied(欺負(fù))by a sibling, and one in three said they had been hit, kicked or pushed by a sibling, others complained of name-calling and having their belongings stolen.

Other reasons for only children being much happier include not having to compete(競爭)for parents’ attention or share bedrooms with a sibling, said Gundi Knies, a researcher on the project.

Dr. Ruth Koppard, a child psychologist, said, “In an average home, the more children, the less privacy for each child. Some love sharing a bedroom with a sibling but they would rather choose to do it than have to do it”.

Homes with just one child make up nearly half of all families in Britain.

The study, to be published on Friday, questioned 2,500 young people. It also found that seven out of 10 teenagers are “very satisfied” with their lives.
