One day,I saw some children trying to catch butterflies. This made me think of my own childhood.
When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina,we lived near a forest, and every evening mockingbirds(知更鳥) would come to the trees and sing.I was so interested in watching birds.I planned to catch a bird and keep her in a cage so that I could hear her sing at any time.
I finally caught one.On the second day,the bird's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby ate everything her mother brought her.I was glad to see this. The following morning when I went to see my mockingbird,I was surprised to find she was dead in the cage! How sad I was!
When Arthur Wayne,a famous ornithologist(鳥類學(xué)家),visited my father,he heard my crying and told me,“If a mother mockingbird finds her young baby in a cage, she will bring poisonous(有毒的) food to the baby. She thinks that it is better for her child to die than to live in a cage.”
Since then,I never caught any animals and put them in a cage. All living animals have a right(權(quán)利) to live free.

What time is it?There are many ways you can find out the time. You may have a watch on your wrist(手腕).You can look at a clock on the wall. You can listen to the radio, watch TV or ring a number on the telephone to get the time. But do you know the history of how people tell the time?
It has not always been easy to know the time.A long time ago people looked at the sun to tell the time. They could tell the time of the day by looking at the sun in the sky:morning, noon and afternoon.
Around the year 1400,people began to use the hourglass(沙漏).It was made of glass with some sand in it.It was wide at both ends, but narrow in the middle. The sand ran from one end to the other in one hour.At the end of every hour, people turned the glass over and began again.Hundreds of years later,a machine called clock was invented.
After that people made small clocks,so that they could carry them in their pockets. Then during World War Ⅰ,men started wearing their watches on their wrists. It was easier to tell the time. Now almost everyone wears a wrist watch.

Mother's Day is celebrated in the USA. It is also a holiday in some other countries. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to thank mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers or cards. On the cards, children will write “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world”, “Best wishes for Mother's Day” and so on. We should make mothers happy on that day.
Where does the idea for the holiday come from? We should thank Miss Anna M. Jarvis. She brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Her mother died on May 9th, 1905.She had a deep love for her mother. She wrote letters to some important persons. In her letters she asked them to decide a day for all mothers. Then Mother's Day was made on the second Sunday in May by the USA in 1913.
In China, children give presents to their mothers on Mother's Day, or the whole family go out and try to do something nice for their mothers. Mothers always think of others more than themselves. They love their children and families very much. Everybody should show his love to his mother and help her as much as possible.

Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(輔導(dǎo)員). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(惹人厭的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil”? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.
When the teacher came, ________. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn’t think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn’t hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip’s behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.
I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.
As I was speaking to him, his_whole_body_came_to_rest_on_my_right_hand_next_to_his_heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I’m pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.
A child’s mind is clear and sensitive(敏感的). He receives whatever others say without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way.
