【題目】 Jessica was a 9-year-old girl from a small village. She finished attending primary school till 4th grade at her village. She went to study in a city school nearby from her 5th grade. However, upon seeing her simple clothing and knowing she is from a small village, other students started to make fun of her.

One day, the teacher told the students to be ready for a surprise test! She told everyone to write down 7 wonders of the world. Everyone started to write the answer quickly. However, it took Jessica quite a while before she started writing.

After everyone handed in their answer paper, the teacher came and asked Jessica, “What happened, dear? Don’t worry. Just write what you know as others have learned about it a few days ago.”

Jessica replied, “I was thinking that there are so many wonders, which 7 I can pick to write!” and then she handed her answer paper to the teacher. The teacher started checking everyone’s answer and most of them had answered them correctly such as The Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, Great Pyramid of Giza, Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc.

The teacher was happy that her students had remembered what she had taught them. At last, she picked up Jessica’s answer paper and started to read. As she saw Jessica’s answer, she was shocked. Then she read out her answer loudly, “The 7 Wonders are —To be able to See, To be able to Hear, To be able to Feel, To Laugh, To Think, To be kind, To Love!”

Enjoy creative inventions

Every November, Time magazine picks out “The 25 Best Inventions” of the year. These are the things that have made our lives different. TEENS has chosen three of the most interesting ones on the list. If you want to know more, please click Here.

Ember Mug

It’s hard to always keep coffee at the right temperature, especially in winter. It’s too hat to drink at first, but before we know it, it gets too cold and loses all its taste. According to Time, the perfect level of warmth for a cup of coffee only lasts for 37 seconds, which makes the Ember Mug a great invention. It keeps your coffee or tea at a certain temperature, anywhere between 48 and 62, once you set it through a smartphone app.

Tasty One Top

TV cooking shows make it look so easy, but it’s almost impossible to get the recipes to look the same as how the professionals make them. However, the Tasty One Top DIY cooking helps. Developed by Buzzfeed, the cooker can be connected to a smartphone app, which has more than 1,700 recipes and videos. You choose a recipe and the app will let the cooker know what to do. For example, it’ll tell you when to turn your steak or when to add certain ingredients.

Jibo

Smart speakers from companies like Amazon and Xiaomi have added a lot of fun to our lives. Though they’re still faceless speakers. However, Jibo, developed by MIT professor Cynthia Breazeal, has brought smart technology to life. Said to be “the world’s first social robot for the home”, Jibo looks like a cartoon character, a round head and a voice that sounds like a 10-year-old boy. Inside its “head”, there are different sensors and cameras, which allow it to recognize (辨認(rèn)) faces and speech. Jibo will move to face you whenever you talk to it. It can also set alarms, remind you of important things, tell you the weather and read news or messages from your friends and family.

【題目】 The lyrebird (琴鳥) is one of Australia’s best-known birds. It has a small head and long, strong legs. Its body is dark brown or gray. The female has a long brown tail behind her but the lyrebird is remembered because of the male’s extremely beautiful tail. It has sixteen feathers and is about one metre long. The two outer feathers of the tail are golden brown and curved. This curved shape reminds people of a musical instrument the lyre. The other surprising thing about the lyrebird is that it can copy perfectly any sound around. It can remember the songs of about twenty other kinds of birds. These days, lyrebirds have been heard copying the sounds of car alarms and crying babies!

Lyrebirds are found in wet rainforest. Because they are not great flyers, they spend most of their time on the floor where there is plenty of food. They use their strong claws to turn over rocks to find something to eat.

After growing into an adult, the male makes a space in the forest, or builds a hill, and he dances on the hill. He spreads his tail forward over his head and shakes it, jumping and moving slowly from side to side. The male sings wonderful songs. How could any female refuse his love?

The female builds her own nest in an old tree or on some rocks. It is a round nest with a hidden side entrance which helps to protect the eggs from other hungry animals. She lays a single egg and brings up her chick alone.

【題目】

Solar storms shake Earth’s magnetic field(磁場). They not only influence human technology, but also animals, reported Forbes.

Studies show that many animals use changes in Earth’s magnetic field to find directions. These changes provide the animals a general compass(指南針) for south and north. Animals can also use them as landmarks.

For example, scientists have found special cells in part of a bird’s eye nervous system(神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)). They seem to react to changes in the magnetic field.

Some fish species, like the common trouthave cells with magnetic sensors in their nasal cavity(鼻腔). In 1994 “magnetic sense” was also discovered in sea turtles.

Some whale species may use magnetic sense to navigate (導(dǎo)航) the oceans. A dysfunction of this sense may explain the still mysterious beachings (動(dòng)物擱淺). Sometimes several hundred animals, such as whales and dolphins, are driven out of water along beaches. They usually can’t breathe under their own weight and die slowly.

1What do many animals use to find directions?

A.Solar storms.B.Magnetic field.

C.Changes in magnetic fieldD.General compass

2Which of the following animals is mentioned in the passage?

A.DogB.Trout.C.WolfD.Panda
