It's hard for middle school students to prepare a program in three weeks. So, I was really nervous. What made matters worse, there were only nine students taking part in. After a discussion among group members, we decided to perform a song and a dance. The song we chose was showed in the Chinese style and I was the lead singer.

Over the next three weeks, we used every minute we could find to rehearse (彩排). The dancers practised during breaks, and I practised through my phone. I used it to compare my performance with the original, which allowed me to correct my mistakes. (it, best, though, tried, everybody, difficult, was, their).

Finally, the day of the performance came. After making up and dressing up, we became nervous. Before going to stage, I told everyone, "No matter how we perform, we are sure to be the best, since the audience has paid a lot to see us."

As we left the stage, many people spoke to us, praising our performance. A foreign student even came over to us, as he was curious about our ancient-style costumes. He took a photo with us, which became the best record of our hard work.

It was hard work that made us a success. Finally, we stood out among the twenty groups to win the prize.

The year 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of the start of diplomatic (外交) relations between China and the United States. When the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations《中美建交公報(bào)》went into effect on Jan 1, 1979, the two countries began a friendship that stays deep to this day. Whether it's stepped-up trade, shared entertainment markets (娛樂市場(chǎng)) or simply people-to-people exchanges, China and the US have helped each other grow and succeed.

Trade and economy (經(jīng)濟(jì))

As the largest and second-largest economies in the world, the US and China have a strong economic relationship. They are both major trade partners for each other, exporting (出口) and importing (進(jìn)口) billions of dollars worth of goods every year. As of October 2019, the total value of trade between both countries was nearly $468 billion (3.26 trillion yuan), according to US Census Bureau. Certain US products, such as high-end (高端) clothing and electronics brands (品牌), are in high demand (需求) in China. Likewise, China exports large amounts of manufactured (制造的) goods to the US, including clothing and industrial equipment (工業(yè)設(shè)備).

Entertainment

As the world's fastest-growing film market, China is Hollywood's top target (目標(biāo)) at the moment, with new releases in China earning millions of dollars. Avengers: Endgame 《復(fù)仇者聯(lián)盟4:終局之戰(zhàn)》 for example, earned $614 million (4.28 billion yuan) in China last year, according to Box Office Mojo. China, for its own part, is working to develop its own movie industry and send its films abroad. The sci-fi film The Wandering Earth 《流浪地球》, which came out last year, did quite well in the US. It became China's third highest-grossing (票房最高的) film of all time with total worldwide earnings of nearly $700 million (4.88 billion yuan), according to Box Office Mojo.

People-to-people exchanges

The US is a top choice for many Chinese students who wish to study abroad. US universities have welcomed record numbers of Chinese students in recent years, with the total number of students reaching 360,000 as of June 2019, according to the BBC. This has allowed students from both countries to gain a greater understanding of each other's cultures. And, of course, there are those on both sides who choose to live and work in each other's countries. Many Chinese researchers work in US labs (實(shí)驗(yàn)室), while in China, there are many US citizens working in fields ranging (范圍) from journalism (新聞) to English education.

As the days get hotter, we can stay inside and turn on the air conditioning to stay comfortable. But do you know that in ancient China, people used a different kind of "air conditioning"?

Starting from the Qin Dynasty, royal and rich families began to store ice during winter. As summer began, they used ice to cool their homes. People would put a container with many ice cubes inside of it in their rooms. Servants would fan the containers to create cool air.

But common people couldn't store ice. So they spent hot days near wells. Some people would keep their food in empty wells. The wells would keep the food cool and fresh, just like a refrigerator.

Chinese people also made their own summer drinks, such as well water and drinks made from herbs(草藥). It is said that Kublai Khan—emperor of the Yuan Dynasty—liked drinking milk with ice an(sweet candy. Some people believe that it was the world's first ice cream.
