In 1993 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon(動(dòng)畫片) film for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash’s voice, he said”Stop! That’s our duck!”
The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the firm The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat(水上住家) and wore his sailor jacket and hat. A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move; they don’t make sounds, they don’t seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation(蟲害), so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on many of the information exactly is still mysterious.
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest(害蟲). To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube(管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the other was uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed(暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbors before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic come from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word, we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.

Many people go to school for an education. Some learn languages, history, math and other subjects. Others go to school to learn a skill. School education is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher can not teach his students everything they want to know. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
Great people before us didn’t get everything from school .Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison did not even finish school. But they were all so successful because they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school . They would ask many questions as they read. They worked hard all their lives. Above all , they knew how to use their heads.

A city in California has got some new buses. They cost $490,000 each. The new buses are different from the old ones. These new buses are better for the environment. They are called hybrid (混合動(dòng)力的) buses. They run on diesel (柴油的) and electric power. This will help keep the air cleaner.
The man drove the new bus on Wednesday and noticed a difference right away. “I get to have clean air for a change”, said driver Melvin Day. “I’m smelling diesel all day long when I drive the old ones.”
The company that builds the buses had many good things to say about them. For example, they said they use a lot less fuel (燃料). They also said that they are 90% cleaner for the environment. The buses are very quiet, too.
The buses have a diesel engine in the back and batteries (電池) on top. When the engine starts up, it is powered by electricity. Then the diesel power takes over.
Over time the city would like to use the new hybrid buses instead of all 50 of their buses. They hope to do this over the next three years. The city will give money to help buy the new kind of buses.
One other bit of good news: the price of the bus ticket will not rise because of the new buses.

For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people’s emotions (情感). How you feel is controlled by many things. Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.
People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals(化學(xué)物質(zhì))which we all need to stay healthy.Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D.Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains(大腦)and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway,so many peple in these countries often feel sad.Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D.Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good.To help the people in these countries feel better, special “sunrooms”with artificial(人造的)lights have been built.People can go there and get “sunlight”for an hour or two!
The weather can also affect people’s emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.
小題1:Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor (因素) that can affect one’s emotions?
A.Weather.B.Actions of others.
C.Personality.D.Age.
小題2:Which of the following is true about vitamin D according to the passage?
A.It is a kind of artificial chemical.
B.It makes us worried by affecting our brains.
C.It is needed by us all to keep fit.
D.It is in the sunlight.
小題3:What can we infer (推斷) from the passage?
A.We feel good when we are in the bright cool weather.
B.We will be happy when we are caught in the rain.
C.All people in Norway and Sweden feel sad in winter.
D.The more vitamin D you have, the happier you’ll be.
小題4:What may be the best title for this passage?
A. Why Do We Feel Sad?
B. The Weather Influences People’s Emotions.
C. People Need More Vitamin D.
D. We Can Hardly Change the Weather.
