Watching some children trying to catch butterflies one August afternoon,I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood. When I was a boy of twelve in South Carolina, something happened to me that made me never put any wild creature        (living thing) in a cage (籠子) .

We lived on the edge of a forest, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds (嘲鶇) would come and rest in the trees and sing. There isn't a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.

I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way,I would have my own private musician.

I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, being scared, the bird fluttered (樸騰) around the cage, but finally it settled down (定居下來) in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my little musician.

On the second day of the bird's captivity,my new pet's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.

The following morning when I went to see how my captive (被監(jiān)禁的,被關押的) bird was doing,I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was terribly surprised! What had happened!I had taken extremely care of my little bird,or so I thought.

Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist (鳥類學家) ,who happened to be visiting my father at the time, hearing me crying about the death of my bird, explained what had happened ," A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison berries (毒莓) .She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity."

Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

On the first day of the eighth grade,I waited at the stop for the school bus. When it arrived,I got on and said hello to the bus driver,Mr Rolland. Then I noticed one little girl called Amy. She was different from everyone else on the bus. "Don't talk to Amy," warned Lauren, who sat beside me. "Or everybody will make fun of you."

Amy had many physical differences―her eyes weren't straight, her glasses were an inch thick, and she had really uneven teeth. Every day as we rode to and from school, kids would shout insults at Amy.

"God,what a strange face!Stop looking at me!" "Mr Rolland!Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are scaring me. Make her put them back on!" they would say. For a while I shouted my share of insults, just to fit in. After all,I didn't want the other kids to treat me the same way they did to Amy. But while I was insulting her,my heart ached for the girl.

I began to pity her. Then I wanted to stand up for her. I just didn't know how to stop my schoolmates until the night of our class rollerskating party. Our whole class was there, including Amy. Amy didn't know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have fun like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. I slowly pulled her away from the wall, and together we began around the skating ring. I never said a word to her,and she never spoke to me. She just smiled and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.

On the school bus the next morning there was much news about Amy and me skating together. But nobody insulted her any more. When the school year ended,my family moved away. And I never heard from Amy again. But I've always hoped that I changed her life for the better.
