In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner-a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed(包裝的) lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they don’t like to have school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have a always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy(起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews and curries for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a pupil, told us, “We used to have a fast food window where you got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There’s a salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

About ten men in every hundred have the trouble of color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected(感染)in this matter. Perhaps, after all ,it is safer to be driven by a woman.
There are different kinds of color blindness. For example, a man cannot see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades (影子) of  green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the difference between blue and green. Only a few unlucky men may see everything in shades of green— a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a different thing to explain. In only one eye there are millions of very small things called “cones(錐狀細(xì)胞)” . These help us to see in the bright light and to tell differences between colors. These are also millions of “rods“(桿狀細(xì)胞),but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shapes but not colors.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes(蚊子) like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue light will. Human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night.

Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒) causes death and injuries around the world. This gas is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. A few years ago, America’s Centers for Disease Control (C. D. C.) studied deaths linked (聯(lián)系) with carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the number of carbon monoxide deaths in the United States was greatest in January. The C.D.C. also found that carbon monoxide kills more than four hundred Americans each year. And, it said more than twenty thousand people are taken to hospital for treatment of health problems linked with the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color, no taste and no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. Yet, carbon monoxide gas is very deadly (致命的). It steals the body’s ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues (血管). It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it. Damage (損害) to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts (數(shù)量) of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depend on how long a person is breathing the gas and how much gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs(標(biāo)志). But people have to be awake to realize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person’s head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. Their stomachs may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop serious headache as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomachache.
Doctors say carbon monoxide influences people differently. For example a small child will experience health problems or die much sooner than an adult. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important.

Comets(彗星) are parts of our solar system. Like the planets, they go around the sun.
But comets are not made of solid rocks like planets. A comet is a ball of dust, stones, and ice. Many people call comets dirty snowballs.
The “snowball” may be only a few miles across. But when the sun heats the “snowball,” much of it is changed to gases. The gases spread out and form the comet’s head, which may be thousands of miles across.
A comet moves fast in its trip around the sun. But when we see it, the comet does not seem to move. That’s because it is so far away. The moon moves fast, but when you look at it, you can’t see any motion(運(yùn)動(dòng)). That’s because the moon is far away.
Each year astronomers(天文學(xué)家) discover new comets. Some of them are seen only once. They make one trip around the sun and then go away out into space. The sun’s gravity cannot hold them.
Other comets, like Halley, keep returning. They have been captured by the sun. Halley’s earliest visit was probably 3,000 years ago. It may keep returning for another 3,000 years.
But every time a comet goes around the sun, the comet loses part of itself. Gases and dust are pulled out of the comet. That’s why Halley is now dimmer(暗淡的) than it used to be. Next time it visits us, in 2062, it may be even dimmer. Each visit it may get dimmer and dimmer, until it finally disappears.
小題1:What is this passage mostly about?
A.Comets and the sun.
B.Why comets are like snowballs.
C.Who discovered the first comet.
D.Facts about comets.
小題2:How does the writer help the reader understand what a comet looks like?
A.By telling about a famous one.
B.By explaining how far away it is.
C.By describing how fast it moves.
D.By describing it as a dirty snowball.
小題3:What is the most likely reason the writer wrote this passage?
A.To give information about comets.
B.To tell readers about famous comets.
C.To explain the importance of comets.
D.To encourage readers to look for comets.
