Teenager Jake Denham was skiing (滑雪) with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn't know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.

Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end,he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.

It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm (鎮(zhèn)定的) .At home,Jake watched a lot of programs about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programs and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed it up the hill so the wind couldnJt blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous—15°C that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.

But he had to get down the mountain. The TV programs always said ,“ If you are lost, you should find someone else's tracks (足跡) through the snow and follow them. ” “I wanted to live my life”,remembers Jake.“So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those. He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. Nine hours after he lost his ski,he found a team of workers who came to save him. He w^as safe!

His mom was very happy when she heard the news. Amazingly,Jake didnJt even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

Big ocean fish have almost disappeared from the world since the start of the fishing business in the 1950s. The scientists found that the number of large fish has dropped by 90 percent in the past fifty years. The study took ten years. The researchers collected records from fishing businesses and governments around the world. The magazine Nature published the findings.

The scientists say the common way called longline (延繩) fishing especially does harm to large fish. This way includes many fishing lines that are connected to one boat. If these lines are joined together, they can reach one hundred kilometers. They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks to catch fish. Longline fishing is especially common in the Japanese fishing industry. Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish for every one hundred hooks. The study says longline fishing boats now might catch one fish per hundred hooks.

The scientists say the fishing business can destroy groups of fish much faster than in the past. The study suggests that large fish can disappear almost completely from new fishing areas within ten to fifteen years. Ocean life systems could be destroyed.

We all know the dangers of fires. It^ good and necessary for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions.

Put a smoke alarm (報警,報警器) in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.

Make escape (逃脫) plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

Buy fire extinguishers (滅火器) and put them in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.

Practise for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:

Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

Stay close to the floor!Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

What will you do if your hair or clothes start to bum? First, stop!Don’t run!The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop!Fall to the Hoor. Then roll (滾動) !

Turning over and over will make the Hre go out. Put a blanket (毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.
