On Christmas Eve—the night before Christmas, children are very happy. They put their stockings at the end of their beds before they go to bed. They want Santa Claus to give them some presents.
Mr. Green tells his children that Santa Claus is a very kind man. He comes on Christmas Eve. He lands on (降落) the top of each house and comes down the chimney (煙囪) into the fireplace (壁爐) and brings them a lot of presents.
Christmas Day always begins before breakfast. The children wake up very early. They can’t wait (等待) to open the presents in their stockings. Then they wake up their parents and shout "Merry Christmas!"
Do you know what Christmas means? Christmas Day is the birthday of Jesus Christ. When Christ was born, many people gave him presents. So today, people still do the same thing to each other.

Hello, I’m Peter in the second grade. Now I have one thing to say: It’s not easy being a kid. Being a kid might look like fun, but sometimes it’s not fun at all.
Yesterday I was playing outside with my friend. We were having a good time. But suddenly, my mother said, “Peter, it’s time to come inside now. It’s getting dark.” When you’re an adult, no one can tell you what to do or when to do it.
When you are a kid, you have to get up early in the morning and go to school. At school, you have to study math, English, science and history. After school, you have to do your homework. When you are an adult, you do not have to go to school and you never have homework to do.
When you are a kid, the older kids sometimes pick on you. When I was walking home from school on Monday, Tom and Steve bothered me. Steve took my schoolbag and put it in a tree. It made me very mad. When you are an adult, no one can pick on you.
When you are a kid, you have to go to bed early. On school nights, my mom asks me to go to bed at 9:00 pm. But I do have parents who love me, which is really great. So I think I like being a kid, even though it’s not easy being a kid.

In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining (請客) at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party or just for coffee and conversation (談話).
Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their homes:
“Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?” “Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”
To reply (回答) to an invitation , either say ‘thank you’ and accept (接受), or say you’re sorry and give an excuse. “Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry . I’ve tickets for a movie.”
Sometimes, however, people use expressions (習(xí)慣用語) that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations . For example; “Please come over for a drink sometime.” “Why not get together for a party sometime?” “Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?”
They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention (提到) a certain time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to expressions like these, people just say “Sure, that would be great!” or “OK. Yes, thanks.”
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?
