Nadia Comaneci,a famous gymnast, was born in Romania in 1961.
When she was doing cartwheels(側手翻)on the playground at the age of 7,a PE teacher saw her. He told her family that she was very good and advised Nadia to train in the capital of Romania. Although it was a long way from her home,Nadia went because she loved gymnastics.
After that, she trained hard and took part in lots of competitions. In 1975,she was thought as one of the most famous athletes of the 20th century.
In 1976,Nadia went to the Olympics in Canada. She was so fantastic in the competition that everyone waited for the score,a high score. But the scoreboard showed 1.00!
Everyone was surprised. There wasn't a sound for a moment. Then a voice came,"Ladies and gentlemen,Nadia Comaneci. . . 10!"
The audience cheered very loudly. So what happened? Well, when the scoreboard was built,no one thought a score of 10. 00 was possible. The decimal point(小數(shù)點)was in the wrong place! In fact, the scoreboard only had three digits(數(shù)位)to show scores, such as 9. 50 or 9. 85 at that time.
In the 1976 Summer Olympics,Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10,which was thought impossible before. From then on,she was looked as a hero. In 1984,she got retired(退役的).

Have you or your friends ever talked about studying abroad? It's becoming a common topic of discussion in China. More students are studying abroad than ever before.
Last year, 662,100 Chinese went abroad to study, a growth of 8.83 percent from 2017. For parents who send their children abroad to study, 43 percent of them hold regular jobs. With quick economic (經濟的) growth and rising income levels (收入水平), China's people have more chances to open their eyes and have more life experiences.
Seventy years ago, however, the picture was different. Thousands of students and science and technology experts(專家) had to have a competition with each other to win a chance to study abroad. It was a valuable and unusual experience for people back then.
In 1984, Wang Huiyao, who later built a non-governmental think tank (智庫) that mainly pays attention to Chinese public policy and globalization (全球化), went to study at the University of Windsor in Canada. He found that while Chinese people knew little about the outside world, Westerners also knew little about Chinese people. "They even asked to touch my head to see if anything was different," he said.
But today, there are fewer of these misunderstandings. With more exchange programs, Chinese students get more chances to share their life stories with people from different cultures. Ma Ying, a15-year-old Beijinger, took a short 7-day study trip to the UK. Attracted by the culture there, she decided to stay and study in the country. "I talked to my parents, and they supported my decison. I'm happy to study more English, understand their humor, and slowly go the local lifestyle," she said.

It is late at night. People in Cape Town,South Africa, line up to collect water from a spring. One by one, they fill their plastic bottles. Each person can take up to 13 gallons(加侖). Policemen stand by to keep the rules. In a few months, that number will be cut in half.
Cape Town is a city of four million people. It is running out of water. For three years, the city has faced a drought(干旱). It is the worst in a century. Local reservoirs(水庫)are mostly sand and dried earth. Officers are telling people to save water.(A)_______, the city will one day be forced to cut off the supply to homes and businesses. That day is being called Day Zero. At press time,Day Zero was expected to be June 4.(B)_______ the date may change based on water levels in local reservoirs.
"There are a lot of people who have not realized the problem." said Shirley Curry. She waited at a spring to get her share of water. "Now they suddenly realize this is for real."
On Day Zero, each person's daily water supply will drop to about 6.5 gallons. (The average American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water per day.) Lines at the city's 200 water collection points will probably get even longer.
Some places will not be included in the cutoff. The water will keep running in hospitals and schools. It will stay on in poor areas, too. This is to prevent illness. Areas popular with tourists may also have water. More than 10 million people visit Cape Town each year. Tourism provides nearly 10% of South Africa's economy.
Across the city, people are making an effort to save water. They are taking 90-second showers. They are washing their clothes less often. Using tap water to wash cars or fill swimming pools is not allowed. Those caught using too much water are punished.
For some people, rationing(定量供應)now feels normal. Kelson da Cruz keeps one container of water near the shower. Another he uses for brushing his teeth and washing his face. He uses non-drinking water to flush(沖洗)the toilet.
