Looking at life differently

When I was 14, life was boring.

However, I didn’t mind having the same views (風(fēng)景) every day. And even though my school had over a thousand students, I didn’t really care to notice the differences between us all.

But this boring view of mine _______ when my parents bought me a camera for Christmas. After a month of playing with my new camera, I realized I had no _______ for taking pictures. Even though I got friends to pose (擺姿勢) in front of ancient buildings and in flowery fields, nothing seemed to _______. My photos were clearly missing something of importance and had no creativity. After a while, I dropped my new hobby.

Then, a month or two later, I suddenly decided to pick it up again. During the summer break, I went for a walk on the railroad tracks (鐵軌) behind my house.

The tracks are a warm red color. Before the walk, I thought, “Maybe I should bring my camera.”

Surprisingly, this _______was what began my love for photography. I didn’t worry about trying to _______ something beautiful. Instead, I just took photos of the beauty already around me.

I quickly ________ about color, lighting, shape and everything in between. After months of studying outdoor sights and looking at people’s eyes, I was _______ able to create beauty of my own. Slowly, my photos became something I was proud of.

So far, my works have appeared in two magazines and been shown in two different museums. They’re not huge achievements, but they’re important to me. And they’re the ______ of how much my artistic abilities have grown.

Thanks to this Christmas gift from my parents, I now have a new way of looking at the world.

Chinese are very generous(慷慨的,大方的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course ( 額外的課程 ) activities where they will either learn music or dance, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills are different, maybe good in some areas ,but poor in others. Most parents fail to realize that today’s children are in need of self-respect and self-confidence.

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious (好奇的) and have interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Parents care about their money. when educating their children.

B. Parents don’t often send their children to the best schools.

C. Parents seldom want their children to take extra-course activities.

D. Parents spend much money on the education without thinking.

2.Most Chinese parents don’t realize __________.

A. how much the best education is worth

B. when children should be educated

C. what children really need in later life

D. why school tests don’t satisfy children

3.The writer’s attitude(態(tài)度) to children’s education is that __________.

A. the cheaper an education is, the better it is

B. children today should learn different skills

C. practical skills are helpful to children’s growth

D. school education can’t meet parents’ expectations
