In American schools there is something called Homecoming (校友會) Day. Many high schools and colleges with a football team have a homecoming game. This can be the most important event of the year except graduation (畢業(yè)) or commencement (畢業(yè)典才L) day. Students plan homecoming day for many weeks in advance.

Several days before Homecoming, students start to decorate (裝飾) the school. There are signs to wish good luck to the team, and many other signs to welcome all the graduates. Many people still come to Homecoming twenty or thirty years after their graduation.

The members of school clubs build booths (攤位) and sell lemonade (檸檬汁) ,apples and sandwiches. Some clubs help to welcome visitors.

During the day people like to look for teachers that they remember from long ago. Often they see old friends and they talk together about those happy years in school.

Everyone soon comes to watch the football game. When the game is half over, the band (樂隊) comes onto the field and plays school songs. Another important moment is when the Homecoming Queen or King appears. All the students vote a most popular student Homecoming Queen or King. It is a great honor to be chosen.

Homecoming is a happy day,but it is not perfect unless the football team wins the game. Even if the team loses, the students still enjoy Homecoming. Some stay at the school to dance, and others go to a party. For everyone it is a day worth remembering.

The marathon in my town usually takes place in summer every year. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance (救護車) in case any of them needed medical care.

"We're supposed to stay behind the last runner,so drive slowly," I said to the driver,Doug,as we began to move forward.

As they began to pace themselves (控制自己的步速) ,the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a white T-shirt.

"Doug, look!" We knew we were already watching our " last runner". Her legs were so disabled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk properly, let alone (更不用說) a marathon.

Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We didn't say a thing. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance, then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggling (掙扎) to put one toot in front of the other,I found myself hurt and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I hoped that she wouldn't.

Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears ran down my face as I watched her with fear, amazement and even respect as she pushed forward with determination through the finish line.

I do not know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life―a part I often depend on. For her,it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize;it was about finishing what she had set out to do,no matter what. When I think things are too difficult or too timeconsuming (費時) ,or I get those "I just can't do it",I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.
