Liang Huili is the leader of Huana International Volunteer Service Group，with hundreds of students, young professionals and business leaders. They held a basketball match to help 150 poor students in western China with school supplies(用品) and winter clothes. Born in Guangdong Province in 1942, Liang moved with her family to Taiwan at the age of seven. Liang taught at a primary school for seven years until her boyfriend went to America in 1969, one year after they got married.

“We didn’t have much money,” she says, “ so I started babysitting for other Chinese families and taking care of my own daughter at the same time.” She also taught children Chinese at Chinese schools. What’s more, she would help newly arrived Chinese families find apartments and work, and sometimes lend them money.

“I remember those students from China who first came in 1986. They didn’t have much money, and idea of what to do,” Liang told us. “ I then asked people in my neighborhood and my Chinese friends for donations(捐贈)－not only some money but also small electronic appliances needed for daily living.”

One of her experiences in Dayton, Ohio made her want to make volunteering a vocation(職業(yè)). She remembers how she once collected(接走) two Chinese professors who had missed their flight and had no one there to pick them up. A friend told Liang about it, and she went to meet them herself around midnight. She found the men feeling lost in that strange country, where no one spoke their language. They didn’t want to go to an American hotel, and didn’t know how they would get to Columbus the next day. “ So I talk to them and took them home with me,” she says, “ and today, I am still in touch with those two professors. We are good friends.”

Sarasota, Florida teen band The Garbage-Men is performing on the stage. The band has five members. They are Jack Berry, Ollie Gray, Harrison Paparatto, Austin Siegel and Evan Tucker. Typically, the teens will set up on the street and perform popular songs from the 1960s, including classic Beatles tunes and crowd favorite “Wipe Out,” by The Surfaris. In between sets, they talk about recycling and offer tips for how to help the environment. While they perform, Jack’s little brother Trent, 11, gives out flyers(宣傳單) about recycling and helps sell the band’s CDs and other musical products.

The band donates(捐贈) the money from sales to charity. They have raised more than $2,500 for Heifer International. The organization gives farm animals, seeds and agricultural(農(nóng)業(yè)的) training to people in poor countries to help end poverty and hunger. “It’s a good, sustainable-development (持續(xù)發(fā)展的)charity,” Jack says, “By donating one animal, you help the whole community.”

The band, all tenth graders, tries to play a show every week. They’ve also played on a Tampa, Florida radio station and auditioned(試演) for America’s Got Talent. The teens hope to eventually take their shows on the road by touring in other states. “Music is a really good way to get a good message across to people because it’s really accessible(可接近的),” Jack says.
