Fast Food Courier Wins Poetry Competition

Lei Haiwei, a 37-year-old fast food courier (送急件的人)from Hunan province won the championship in a televised Chinese poetry knowledge competition, winning fans over with his true love for poems.

“My interest in poems began as early as I was 6 years old,” Lei said after winning the competition.

Lei Haiwei was born in a village of Dongkou county, Shaoyang city. He inherited (繼承) his father Lei Changgen’s love of poems. The elder Lei put poetry on the kitchen wall for his son to read throughout childhood.

“My father hoped I would grow up to be a man who keeps the mountains, rivers, lakes and seas in mind,” the courier said.

In the father’s small house, there is a four-story bookshelf, the top of which is filled with poetry books. Lei Haiwei showed great interest in Chinese culture when he was a child. Every time his father told him the stories behind each poem, he was totally attracted. He enjoyed reading poems.

In 2001, the younger Lei graduated from a technical secondary school and found a job in Shanghai. Lei began to read books related to poems at bookstores or libraries in his spare time, since he didn’t have enough money to buy many. The young man also developed a habit of reciting poems he liked, writing down them after returning home.

Though Lei came to Hangzhou city in 2008 and works as a fast food courier, his love for poems hasn’t faded (減退). On his busiest work days, the courier has to deliver more than 50 orders a day, earning up to 9,000 yuan a month. Even so, he seized any available moment to recite poems.

“For example, I am used to reciting poems when I wait for food at restaurants, and traffic lights on my way to deliver food. Reciting poems not only enriches my knowledge, but also makes my job less boring,” the courier said.

As for his future plans, the courier said he will stick to reading and reciting poems.

Tommy White has been rowing across the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat since he left California on July 10 ,2007. He has been heading for Australia with only birds, fish, and sharks ever since.

Crossing the Pacific is only part of his journey. Tommy has decided to go all the way around the world using his own energy. He will row, bike, walk, and climb the world without help from any motor (馬達) at all. His plan includes climbing the tallest peak on six of the continents (大陸) along the way.

For the first part of his trip, he bicycled 5,546 miles from Seattle, Washington to Mount Mckinley in Alaska and back, walked 67 miles to base camp, and climbed 20,320 feet to Mckinley's top. Now in the second part of his dangerous trip, he is rowing to Australia.

Why would he try to go around the world this way? He explains that he wants to encourage kids to dream their dreams and get to their own goals. He wants to show kids that there might be hard parts along the way, and sometimes they might not even get to that final goal. But they can have great adventures and learn a lot along the way.

Tommy has already faced some difficulties. For example, wind and waves keep pushing him westward when he wants to go south toward the Solomon Islands. If his luck doesn’t change, he will cheerfully change his plan, and aim to land at Papua New Guinea. One way or another, he's sure he’ll get to his next goal: Australia.

When his trip around the world takes him across land, he enjoys meeting people — especially children. He has already visited many schools and shared his story.

Tommy encourages all kids to set their eyes on a goal and not to give up. He says, "With goals, we will make progress, and we will be farther along than when we started, even if we don't get to some goals. That's called life! ”

1.How has Tommy decided to go all the way around the world?

2.Which part of his trip is he in now?

3.If his luck doesn’t change, where does he aim to land?

4.What does he enjoy on his trip across land?

5.To Tommy, does life mean struggling for (為… 而奮斗)the goals?
