D
Graffiti is a common feature of most Western cities. The word graffiti was from the Greek word, graphein, which only meant writing. These days, however, the word means drawing or writing on the walls of buildings, or the public transportation, such as trains or buses.
Graffiti, as a form of expression, was born in New York during the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, a new modern culture about city life appeared. Graffiti was a written form of expression of that life. Later, it was mixed with a musical form called hip-hop that was another expression of the city life.
At first, graffiti artists used pens. But then, with the development of graffiti, they became experienced. They turned to using spray paint (噴漆罐). Spray paint allowed them to draw a greater area. And it also allowed them to work quickly.
At present, different people have different ideas about graffiti. Some people say it makes the cities dirty. It isn’t allowed by many local governments in America. The governments spend more than a million dollars a year cleaning graffiti. The money, they say, could be better spent on health or education. Other people think it is a form of art. In fact, the works of some famous graffiti artists can be found in museums, galleries, and art books.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You’re not alone. Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their backpacks (schoolbags)
“It hurts my back when I run,”said Oberlin Reyes, a student in Virginia. “It’s hard to go up the stairs with my backpack, because it’s too heavy,”
Oberlin was among students whose backpacks were weighed for a week in a recent study.
They had regular backpacks with two straps(帶子)to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks (which have wheels and can roll on the ground).
Shirley Park, whose backpack weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back  pain.
How much is too much?Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.
A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load:less homework.

People believed for a long time that heart was the center of a person’s emotions. That is why the word “heart” is used in so many expressions about emotional situations.
One such expression is to “l(fā)ose your heart” to someone. When that happens, you have fallen in love. If your friend says no to you, do not “l(fā)ose heart”. Be “strong-hearted”. Sit down with him or her and have a “heart to heart” talk. Be open and honest about your situation. Then you may have a “change of heart” Then you could stop worrying and “put your heart at rest”.

Whatever the situation, you need to understand gestures(手勢). Many gestures that we use are universal(通用的). Some of them can create wrong meanings to others. Using the wrong gesture could get you into trouble when you communicate with foreigners. Be careful with these gestures:
The ‘thumb up’ sign—In Italy, Germany and Greece, this sign simply means the number one. In Russia the meaning of this expression is ‘good’ or ‘well done’. In Egypt and Iraq, it means perfect or very good. It is widely used between people. But in Iran it is traditionally an obscene(不正經(jīng)的) gesture.
The ‘OK’ sign—Often used to mean agreement, but it is considered rude in Brazil, southern Italy, Germany and Greece. In Japan, this gesture is a sign of money. In southern France it is used to show that something is worthless.
The victory sign—With the index finger and middle finger rose to form a V. It means victory or peace. Be careful about using it in Britain, however, if the palm is facing toward you, the gesture is considered obscene.
Snapping your fingers(打響指)—Some might use this gesture to get someone’s attention. In France and Belgium it sends a bad message. You would never snap your fingers to get a waiter’s attention.
Hands in the pockets—This is commonly seen in daily life. In Finland, Sweden, France, Belgium, Indonesia and Japan, putting your hands in your pockets would be considered impolite in a business meeting.
The meaning of gestures is not universal. Use these tips to prevent a cultural misunderstand. When in doubt, the best advice would be to ‘keep your hands to yourself.’
