【題目】 What does it take to graduate from university? Some papers or high scores in exams? Well, these are not enough if you are a student at Tsinghua University.
According to a new rule of the university, students must prove themselves in the swimming pool. They need to pass a swimming test of at least 50 meters, and those who fail the test will be required to take a swimming course throughout their school years. By the time they graduate, they will have known how to swim; otherwise they can't graduate with their bachelor's deegrs(學(xué)士學(xué)位).
The news made waves in Chinese social media(媒體). Some people praised the university for requiring a necessary skill that can save lives, and they also believed that the rule would help improve students' health. However, others questioned if it was fair to expect those who come from inland cities(內(nèi)陸城市) to be able to swim.
In fact, this is not a new rule. Tsinghua University first made swimming a requirement in 1919 but later gave it up because the number of students became too large and there were not enough swimming pools in the school for them to learn swimming.
Anyway, it is sill good news that Chinese students' health has become more and more valued.
Why not just take this chance to learn one more life-saving ability?

【題目】 Hairstyle is thought to be a personal style choice.
However, some Chinese students are required by their school to have unified (統(tǒng)—的) haircuts, with short hair for male students and shoulder-length hair for female students. Some students don't like such hairstyles and have broken the rules in school.
A complaint letter by a middle school student in Fuzhou, Fujian province as well as the response of the local education bureau (教育局) to the letter has caught public attention. The letter has sparked (引發(fā)) public discussion on whether schools should control how students wear their hair.
In the letter, which was published recently on Fuzhou's 12345 website, the student wrote, “I think the so-called 'good purposes' of the school are wrong and I highly question whether this kind requirement really helps students to develop good habits and show good appearances," the student said.
The school told students that it is easy for teenage male students to pay more attention to beautiful female students, so the school wants girls to have simple appearances and develop their talents, the letter said.
"I think these words are a complete lie. How can you expect someone to have a colourful future if he or she does not know how to look attractive? Why does the school need to make all the teenage boys pay no attention to girls? Doesn't the school need more sexual (性別的) education?
"Teenagers should be colourful and different. Isn't it boring when people look back on their teenage years and can only remember ugly haircuts and same uniforms? Why can't the school give students a choice to be themselves? "
The Fuzhou education bureau wrote back to the student and said it proves that the writer is a good student with his own thoughts, courage and truth-seeking spirit. The schools ask students to have unified haircuts and wear uniforms because it is easy for teenagers to pay much attention to their appearances and little attention to their studies, the bureau said. Collectivism (集體主義) is very important for the country's development. Although the city has required students to have unified haircuts, schools can set different hairstyle standards that allow students to show their personal styles.

【題目】 In a faraway country, there were two carpenters (木匠) who were both so good at their job that no one could tell who was better.
One day, the country's king thought of a way to figure out which one was better. He would have them compete against each other in a contest. The winner would become the official royal(皇家的)carpenter.
The king sent for the two carpenters and the contest began. The carpenters were given three days to carve (雕刻) a wooden mouse. Whoever carved the most lifelike mouse would be the winner.
The first carpenter carved a fine mouse with vivid (生動(dòng)的) and lifelike feature. The second carpenter's mouse, however, looked quite rough. In fact, it hardly even looked like a mouse at all.
The king and his ministers (大臣) agreed that the first carpenter was the winner.
The second carpenter said, "This judgment is unfair. We should ask a cat which mouse looks the most realistic. Cats can recognize mice much better than humans, after all."
The king thought this was a good idea. He ordered his ministers to catch several cats and bring them to judge (評(píng)判) the carpenters' mice. Surprisingly, all of the cats were more attracted to the second carpenter's mouse.
The king asked the second carpenter, "How did you make the cats believe that your mouse looked more real?" The carpenter said, "Your Majesty, if you look closely, you can see that I carved a mouse holding a fishbone! The cats care not about how real it looks, but how delicious it might taste."
