【題目】Mr Edwards can never go to work on time. He works in London but he lives in the countryside (鄉(xiāng)村) of a city called Cambridge. He loves his home, so he doesn’t want to move to London; he loves his job, so he wants to keep it. The problem is that the traffic in London is very heavy every day. There are too many cars. During the rush hour you can walk faster than you drive a car!
Mr Edwards thinks a helicopter (直升機) is the final solution to this problem. Mr Edwards
wants to fly over everyone else. A helicopter will be expensive and he will have to learn how to fly it but he says that many kinds of cars are also expensive. He is right. One of the most famous British car is the Bentley and it is only for rich people.
His wife said he could just ride a bicycle, but he argued that there are too many hills in Britain and that Cambridge is more than 60 kilometres from London. Then his wife suggested that he should take the train to London. “That won’t work,” he said. “I like the feeling of freedom (自由) when I’m driving. I won’t feel that on the train! Also, I will have to walk from the station to my office. You know how difficult it is to cross the road even at traffic lights.”
Then he thought for a moment and continued, “But in a helicopter I can feel completely free and crossing the road will be easy!” He started to sing, “Up there, where the air is cleaner!”
His wife sighed, “But my dear, up there, you will get airsick!”

【題目】What are magic words? Words like ‘thank you’, ‘please’ and ‘sorry’ can work wonders in our daily life. These polite expressions are used every day in American – among strangers, between friends or with family. People with good manners always communicate with others well by using these magic words.
What should you do when you receive a gift for your birthday?你最好坐下來寫一封感謝信。68. The words ‘thank you’ are very important and used very often. We say them when someone hands us a letter, passes us a book, offers us a drinks, or lends us an umbrella.
‘Please’ is another important word, but many people forget to use it. It is not polite to ask someone for help without saying ‘please’. We are supposed to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book, a pen, or more milk. It may be in the classroom, at home, or at the bus stop. We can use ‘please’ to make a request(請求)pleasant.
我們也應該學會說‘對不起’。If we have hurt someone’s feeling, we will have to say ‘sorry’. When we have told a lie and regret it, the same word should be used. Sometimes we have forgotten something or broken a promise, so we need to explain with the word as a beginning. ‘sorry’ is such a word that can make people forget wrongs.
‘Thank you! Please! Sorry!’ – these words are simple but useful. Man said them long ago. We use them now. So will our kids.
