The British are famous as animal lovers, and in a nation of about 60 million people, there are about 27 million pets! The most popular pets are dogs and cats.
Many British people say that the main reason they have a pet is to keep them company (陪伴) .According to a recent report,60% of people who live on their own have a pet as company. A lot of pet owners treat their pet just like one of the family. Many cat owners make holes in their doors so their cats can come and go as they please. Dog owners spend a lot of time walking their dogs.
Another reason to own a pet is for protection, especially dogs. Most thieves would think twice about breaking into (闖入) a house if they could hear a large dog barking inside. Some people choose their pets because of their beauty. The most beautiful animals can win prizes at pet shows !
In the UK,some pet owners think that nothing is too good for their animal! Some people take their pet to the animal doctor more often than they visit their own doctor. They might even take a day off work to carefor a pet when it is sick. Many people talk to their pets, and some talk to them over the telephone. And of course, they mustn't forget to celebrate the animal's birthday!

A It was a Sunday and the heavy storm (暴風雨) had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm sea touching the beach gently.
My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was only fourteen and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I'm so glad I did.
Everything was terrible, but the harbor (海港) was in fairly good shape. After all,it was protected by the arms of a bay (海灣) that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on the boat,we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the front.
When we were near,we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn't believe it―there aren't any whales along the coast (海岸) here, the storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay,in which the water was so badly polluted that nothing could live.
The little baby whale―actually—as big as our boat―was stuck and couldn't move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big waves. "She is trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said. At this point,my father moved our boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mom. They tried to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes, rising from the water right beside us to breathe―and give us a trusting look with their huge eyes. When they hit the first part of clean water from the sea,the mom gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the front.
In the excitement it had felt like a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. I still remember it although 40 years has passed.
