I have lived in France for nine years, but I cannot walk down the street without being recognized(認(rèn)出)as an Englishman from 50 metres away,
before I open my mouth. Why?
In France, the quickest way to recognize an Englishman is that he’ll be the one with the belly(肚子)and the shirt hanging out. Englishmen
often wear shapeless black T-shirts, either too big or too small. However. Frenchmen are more formal(正式的)in dressing. Their T-shirts have
collars(領(lǐng)子). Shorts have buttons and zips rather than drawstrings(拉繩). Shoes look expensive.
Englishmen think of lunchtime as 1 pm, but for Frenchmen it is 12 o’clock, one hour earlier. This may explain the sad looks if an Englishman
arrives at a local restaurant at 1:30 pm. At that time most restaurants don’t have waiters. All the cooking and serving may be done by the boss
and his wife. When you are shown to your table, just sit there and wait. Don’t wave your hands to the waiters. Englishmen think guests should
do something to make the waiters pay attention to them. But in France some bread and water will come first, then the waiters will take your order
according to the rhythm(節(jié)奏) of the restaurant. Have enough patience(耐心)!

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.
Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people takenapsin the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer(遭受) less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!
If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
1.Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?
A. Because it’s very hot in summer.
B. Because you eat too much for lunch.
C. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.
D. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.
2.What advice does the writer give on taking a nap?
A. If your time is limited, a short nap can also help.
B. Only people in warmer climate need to take a nap.
C. You’d better take a nap about an hour after you have lunch.
D. You can sleep as long as you like so that you won’t feel tired or sleepy.
3.What can we learn about “naps” according to the third paragraph?
A. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.
B. Taking naps is helpful for people’s health in spring and summer.
C. If you take naps every day, you’ll have less risk of heart disease.
D. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.
4.What can we infer(推斷) from the passage?
A. You will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.
B. Taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.
C. If you get up at 6:30 am, you’d better take a nap at about 2:30 pm.
D. Sleeping for eight hours and you’ll feel sleepy a short period later.
5.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Just For a Rest. B. All For a Nap.
C. A Special Sleep Pattern. D. Taking Naps in Warmer Climate.

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺騙)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some officers often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she tries another term. One of the persons who don’t support her says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.’’
Advertisers will sometimes use half—truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. ”It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of thing happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
1.We may infer that the author believes people should ________.
A. buy lottery tickets if possible
B. make use of half—truths
C. be careful about what they are told
D. not trust the Yucky Company
2.How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?
A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four
3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Using half truths is against the law.
B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.
C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.
D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.
4.Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. He’s really a big loser!
B. Sometimes the truth can lie.
C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.
D. It’s against the law to make false statements.
