【題目】 Weather talk wins for people in US My Chinese friend is going to the US and he is nervous about what to talk about. "Talk about the weather," is my advice.

"How are you?" is often followed by comments(評論) about the weather. "Nice day today."

"Cold/hot enough for you?" "Will it ever stop raining?" "Some winter we're having." "Can't remember a winter/summer so cold/hot." "Whew, it's hot out there."

These statements are often followed by a long conversation entirely about weather conditions. Past, present and the future.

Our fascination with weather might seem silly, but the real purpose behind those endless discussions is small talk. Weather's a safe topic of conversation. As a group, we Americans seem to enjoy chatting with those around us. Whenever we stand in line at the grocery store, we like to take part in this kind of conversation with other people standing in line with us. If I were seated next to another American on any form of public transport, I'd expect both of us to make a harmless comment about the weather as a way of greeting each other. At parties, the weather is a common topic, especially with those you are meeting for the first time.

In contrast (相反),we are taught to avoid certain topics like religion (宗教)and politics. Weather is everywhere, it affects everybody and it's a fairly objective, neutral (中性的)topic; You don't have to have an opinion about it, just make a state of a fact. What is truly interesting is the fact that we can go on and on about it.

My Chinese friend has a hard time understanding why we put so much effort into this topic-and why I warn him about bringing up much more "interesting" subjects like salaries(薪資) or how much something costs.

Sometimes it is tricky (棘手的) to make one's on winding cultural roads, especially those that are never taught in books.

1What does the underlined word "fascination" in Paragraph 4mean?

A.AdviceB.Prediction

C.Strong interest.D.Wild imagination.

2In the author's opinion, weather is a common conversation topic in America because ______.

A.Americans don't like to talk about other topics except weather

B.Weather affects everyday choices like clothes and changes a lot

C.Weather is quite an objective topic and doesn't cause bad feelings

D.Americans use it as a greeting when they can’t bring up much more interesting subjects

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Weather is a good topic of conversation all over the world.

B.Cultures that are not taught in books should be written about more.

C.Topics for conversation should be well considered in the United States

D.The more topics you are interested in, the better you can be at small talk.

【題目】 How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?

The program for International Student Assessment(PISA), which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people.

This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who usually can get high scores as well, displayed just common collaborative(合作的)skills.

“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades, said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president ( 前副經(jīng)理 ) of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they regard school as a place for competition.”

“However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve it.”

Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are most likely to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitude( 態(tài) ) toward relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.

PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class discussion, students would have better attitudes towards collaborating.

1From Paragraph 2, we can know PISA is________.

A.a survey systemB.a skill system

C.a program groupD.a finding result

2According to the passage, the survey focuses on students’ ability to________.

A.prepare societyB.work with others

3In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “it”refers to________.

C.collaborative importanceD.collaborative skill

4According to the passage, teachers can to help students work together.

A.give students high scores on tests.B.help students reduce exam pressure.

C.provide more communicative activitiesD.make girls work with girls instead of boys

5According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The better grades, the better at teamwork.

B.Gender(性別) has no influence on collaboration.

C.Please focus as much on collaboration as on grades.

D.It's important for students to develop collaboration.

【題目】Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題)

Instead of studying abroad during college, more and more Chinese teenagers have chosen to do so as early as in high school. Students from China make up about 42 percent of the international students at high schools in the US, according to the latest study by the Institute of International Education. So, what is the main attraction for Chinese high school students to study abroad? What is overseas life like? We interviewed several students. Have a look!

Pan. 15. Moreau Catholic High School in San Francisco, California, US

In the future, I want to go to college in the US. Studying in high school here will help me get used to college life in the future. Also, I want to improve my English. Studying here is not easy. Instead of exams like in China, we have more projects in class. For example, we have to make a PPT about a historical figure and then design a creative item for that person, such as a painting.

Zhao. 15. Unionville High School in Toronto, Canada

For me, experience matters. It’s good to have the experience of living in another country. Unlike other international students, my parents accompanied me, which makes my life here much easier.

In Canada, I have more time to develop my interests. I can choose classes I like. However, taking the entrance examinations to high school and college at home would be great. It’s a shame that I have no chance to do that.

Zheng. 14. Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland, Ohio, US

I want to try different cultures and education styles. Two years ago, visited some famous universities in Boston, such as Harvard and MIT. The academic atmosphere(學(xué)術(shù)氛圍) deeply impressed me. Every student seems to spare no effort on academics. I saw students doing morning exercise everywhere and I watched a football game. I found that school life in the US was colourful. So I decided to study in the US.

1How many international students in American high schools are from China?

________________________________________________________________________

2Why does Pan choose to study in the high school in the US?
