【題目】 Rethink, Reuse, Recycle!
Do you often throw away things you don’t need anymore? Have you ever thought about how these things can actually be put to good use? Nothing is a waste if you have a creative mind.
You have probably never heard of Amy Hayes, but she is a most unusual woman. She lives in a house in the UK that she built herself out of rubbish. The windows and doors come from old buildings around her town that were pulled down. The top of the house is an old boat turned upside down. And the gate in front of her house is made of rocks and old glass bottles. Amy recently won a prize from the Help Save Our Planet Society. The president said, “Amy is an inspiration to us all.”
Amy isn’t the only one who is good al recycling. Jessica Wong from Hong Kong uses old clothes that people don’t wear anymore to make bags. She has been doing this for a few years now. She opened a small shop where she sells her bags, and she has also set up a website to sell them online. She especially likes to use old jeans to make handbags. Her bags are cute and useful. “I plan to write a book about new ways to use old clothes,” she said. “I hope people can read my book and enjoy it!”
Wang Tao set up a small business in Shanghai four years ago. He is known for using iron and other materials from old cars to make beautiful art pieces. Some are large pieces that look like animals or humans, and some are smaller pieces you can put at home. The more popular works can even be seen in art shops around the city. Wang Tao hopes to set up a “metal art” theme park to show people the importance of environmental protection. Not only can the art bring happiness to others, but it also shows that even cold, hard iron can be back to life with a little creativity.

【題目】I was a small boy of 8, and was having lunch in a restaurant with my mother and my grandma. I ordered a Salisbury steak, confident in the knowledge that under that wonderful name was a good hamburger. When brought to the table, it was with a plate of peas. I have always hated peas. I don’t know why anyone would like to eat peas. I never ate them before. And I certainly was not about to eat them now.
“Eat your peas, ”my grandmother said.
“Mother, ”said my mom. “He doesn’t like peas. Leave him alone. ”
My grandmother did not answer, but I saw something strong in her eyes. “I’ll pay you $5 if you eat them, ”she said.
I sat there still. In my mind, $5 was a huge, nearly unimaginable amount(數(shù)量) of money, and as terrible as peas were, only one plate of them stood between me and that $5. I began to eat them.
My mother was angry while grandma was pleased. My mother stared at(盯著) her mother and me. If there were a staring Olympics, she would win the gold medal. The stares made me nervous, and every single pea made me nearly throw up, but the image of $5 were in my mind, and I finally finished them.
My grandmother left for Aunt Lillian’s a few weeks later. That night, at dinner, my mother served a big bowl of peas. I, of course, said no at once. My mother looked at me coldly and then cae the words that followed me for years.
“You ate them for money.” she said. “You can eat them for love. ”
Oh, despair(絕望)! Oh, my god! Now, too late, came the understanding that I’d drawn myself into something from which there was no way to run away.
What possible answer could I say against that?
I ate them. I ate them that day and every other time they were served. The five dollars were quickly spent. My grandmother passed away a few years later. But the story of the peas lived on, and the words became my forever nightmare(噩夢(mèng)), “You ate them for money, you can eat them for love. ”

【題目】Ask any student which subject he or she hates most. 9 out of 10 students will answer “math”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn art, geography, chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn math. Why is this so? How come so many students hate math, and yet cannot avoid learning it in school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks, “What good do we get from learning math? We can use computers to compute numbers, and we can use computers to store information. I think learning math at school is a waste of time.”
However, there is much more to math than just learning to add and subtract (減) numbers. In fact, math is not so much about calculation (計(jì)算) as it is about learning to think logically (邏輯地) and solving problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but how would we even know how to use the computer if we can't think logically? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.
For example, imagine you are a cook and must serve dinner to 100 guests. How should you divide yourresourcesso that you can get the job done most efficiently (高效地)? In situations like this, the ability to think logically will get you to a reasonable answer and solve your problem.

【4】What does the underlined word “resources” mean in the passage?
A. 科目 B. 效率 C. 信息 D. 資源
【5】What does the writer want to tell us?
