In some Western countries, many children do chores to get pocket money. They usually start to do this when they are ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests. They don’ t have much free time on weekdays. They often do chores on weekends.
Young kids only do easy chores. So they don’ t get much money. But that’ s enough. Many of them only want to buy candy. And candy is cheap! They often help do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pet cat or dog.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass, or cook meals.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to use a lawnmower (割草機(jī)) or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.

Where do you think people will live in the future? Can you imagine people work and live in the sea? But how will people go to work then? By submarine (潛水艇)!
Some scientists believe that some day submarines will be as many as today’s car. A famous French driver says, “One day, man will work on the ocean floor as they do on the street!”
If people want to live in the sea, they have to solve a lot of problems first. Some of these problems, similar to those of living on the moon, are that there isn’t enough oxygen and people may be in weightless(失重的) conditions. Many questions are hard to answer. For example, what will happen to our bodies if we live in the sea for a very long time? Scientists are looking for answers.

Could getting a good night’s sleep avoid putting on weight for children?
According to a new study, putting preschoolers in bed by 8 P.M. could reduce their chances of becoming overweight later in life by half. Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.
The researchers from Ohio State University wrote their findings in the Journal of Pediatrics. They have found that young children who go to bed after 9 P.M. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She says that it’s very important for parents to create a bedtime routine for their children.
How was the research conducted? Researchers chose 977 children for it. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in ten U.S. cities. In order to have a clearer picture of the results, researchers then divided the children into three groups:
*those who went to bed by 8 P.M. or earlier;
*those who went to bed between 8 P.M. and 9 P.M.;
*those whose bedtimes were after 9 P.M.
When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at the results of the study. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of ten was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 at night. 16 percent of the children became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent of the children became obese.
“Having a usual bedtime routine can lower children’s risk of becoming overweight. Besides, as usual, early bedtime is also likely to have positive effects on behavior and social development,” said Professor Anderson.
1.Where were the researchers from? (within 6 words)
2.How many children were chosen for the research? ( within 2 words)
