【題目】 Black beauty

My first home was a beautiful meadow with a pound of clear water. There were some large trees near the pond. On one side of the meadow was a field and on the other was the house of our master, Farmer Grey. He was a kind man.

My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day. I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.

One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house.

“You are a beautiful horse,” he said, “You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty.”

I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins(韁繩) and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them, but all of the horses had to wear them.

My master had two horses. One of them was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.

Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.

Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, “My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master didn't care.”

Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. I stopped. “Something is wrong,” I thought. I didn't want to go on to the bridge. Mr. Gordon and John wanted me to go on to the bridge. I didn't move. Just then a man saw us. “Stop!” he cried.

“The bridge is broken in the middle. If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.”

“Thank god!” said the Squire.

Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

When we returned home, Squire Gordon told his wife, “We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty.” That night. I was glad, because I was very tired.

【題目】 How does fake ‘meat’ taste?

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “space meat”? It sounds quite weird. But in fact, it could very well be the future of the human diet.

A Russian astronaut recently “grew” meat aboard the International Space Station. Yes, you read that right - he grew it using cells provided by an Israeli company called Aleph Farms. But in fact, he was not the first person to create lab-grown meat. Dutch scientist Mark Post grew the first lab meat in 2013.

But why bother growing meat in a lab when we can get the real thing from cows? For one thing, lab-grown meat is healthier. “We gain greater control over what the meat consists of(……組成), for example its fat content,” Post said in an interview with The Atlantic. Lab-grown meat is also free of the chemicals that are used on farms, such as pesticides(農(nóng)藥) and growth hormones(激素).

Are there other ways to replace(代替) regular meat? McDonalds is trying to do so with the P.L.T., which stands for plant, lettuce and tomato. The first P.L.T. burgers are already being sold in Canada, according to the fast food company.

The “meat” in the P.L.T. is made out of Beyond Meat, a plant-based meat substitute( 替代品 ) created by a company from Los Angeles, US. The company uses pea, rice and bean proteins to produce patties(肉餅) that look and taste like real meat.

Experts doubt whether these products are healthier than real meat. But they have already proven to be a success, with several fast food companies already offering such products on their menus, according to Fox Business.

1What did the Russian astronaut do recently?

A.He grew meat on the International Space Station.B.He provided cells for an Israeli company.

C.He built a lab for growing meat in space.D.He created the first lab-grown meat in the world.

2Why is lab-grown meat healthier than real meat?

A.Because it is produced in clean labs.B.Because it is made from healthy cells.

C.Because lab meat doesn’t consist of fat.D.Because producers can control what’s in the meat.

3According to the story, P.L.T. burgers ________ .

A.taste better than normal burgersB.are made out of plant protein

C.are already being sold in the USD.are served by many fast food companies

4What do experts think of plant-based meat products?

A.They will be the future of the human diet.B.They are free from harmful chemicals.

C.They might not be healthier than real meat.D.They have already proven to be a success.

【題目】閱讀下面的短文,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)補(bǔ)全短文。選項(xiàng)中有一項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。

A simple life means leaving out many of the things you do so that you can spend more time with people you love and do the things you love. However, getting to simplicity isn't always simple. It's often a journey of two steps forward and one backward.

Evaluate(評(píng)估)your time. 1 What things do you do from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep? Make a list, and evaluate whether they're necessary. If not, leave them out and focus on what's important.

Limit(限制)your communications. Our lives these days are filled with communications: email, cell phones, paper mail and more. 2 Instead, set a limit on your communications: only deal with emails at certain times of the day. Limit phone calls to certain times too. It is the same with other communications. Set a timetable and stick to it.

Try living without a car. OK, this isn't something I've done, but many others have. 3Walk, bike, or take public transportation. It reduces costs and gives you time to think. A car is also very complicated, needing not only car payments, but insurance, repairs, gas and more.

4 If you rid(去除)your home of useless things, you might find you don't need so much space. I'm not saying you should live on a boat, but if you can be comfortable in a smaller home, it will not only be less expensive, but easier to maintain(維護(hù)),and greatly simplify your life.

A.Have a place for everything.

B.How do you spend your day?

C.It's something I would do if I didn't have kids.

D.They can take up your whole day if you let them be.

E.Consider a smaller home.
