The secret of the aroma

What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed(展示)at the entrance? Or the soft background music?

But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is provided as an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.

A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.

Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (實體店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.

Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

1According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of somebrand stores?

A.Unique scents.B.Friendly assistant.

B.For stores in Paris, the smell is more important than the window displays.

C.Both the E-commerce and the real stores focus on the attractiveness of goods.

D.Many famous stores nowadays are trying hard to find the ideal scent.

A.compare and evaluateB.examine and assess

根據(jù)第二段的“But while a shop's scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds,And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase”可知,雖然與視覺和聲音相比,商店的氣味可能并不突出,但它是鼓勵人們購買的一個日益強大的工具。

根據(jù)第五段的“while e-shops only bricks-and-mortar stores (實體店) can offer a full experience”可知,雖然網(wǎng)店可以使用圖片和聲音,但只有實體店才能提供完整的購物體驗,即強調(diào)傳統(tǒng)實體店的優(yōu)勢。故選A。

根據(jù)“One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.” 根據(jù)“When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales.” 根據(jù)“But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (實體店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. And scent is just one way to achieve this. ”可知,網(wǎng)店和實體店都是想辦法在顧客進店的那一刻就留住他們,網(wǎng)店采用的是聲音和圖像,實體店采用的是香味。因此C項不正確。根據(jù)“A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.”

Every culture has some kinds of person-to-person greeting. But they are different all over the world.

In some countries such as the United States, handshakes and hugs are very common. In many European cultures, kisses on the cheek or air kisses are the thing to do when greeting people. And if you play on a sports team, high fives may be the greeting — no matter what your cultural background.

These are our traditions during normal times.

With the outbreak of the new coronavirus (新冠病毒), health official (官員) all over the world are asking people to wash their hands frequently. People are warned to avoid large crowds to control the spread of the disease. This has led to new ways of greeting around the world.

In the video, a man offers his hand to another man for a handshake. Instead of shaking hands, the two men greet each other by kicking feet — quick right kick, quick left kick. The video then shows more men greeting each other this way. It looks like a dance step or a soccer move.

Other videos are appearing on social media showing people in other parts of the world using the foot tap as a greeting.

We do elbow touch, we do foot tapping or, we say, foot kissing ...”

Another reporter in VOA, Sharon Wu, is taking a different way. For now, she has not changed the way she greets guests. However, she has a new after-greeting habit group hand-washing. “Recently we’ve had some guests coming to the studio. And for me, I still shake hands with them. But after that I say, ‘Okay. Let’s both go to the restroom and wash hands.’”

One Sunday morning in June 1959 my mother walked into my room. "Surprise!" she said, proudly holding up a yellow dress. "I made it just for you. What do you think?"

I bit my tongue. How could I tell Mum it was the ugliest dress I had ever seen?

"It's perfect for church," my mother continued delightedly. "I wish someone had made a dress like this for me."

Too bad you can't wear it, I thought. But I knew Mum had spent a lot of time on the dress. No one should refuse. Unwillingly I put it on.

All through church I prayed (祈禱), "Lord, let me get out of here without anyone seeing me." Especially Dennis Pearce, the boy I had a crush on, one of the coolest boys at Neptune High School. Although we were in some of the same classes, Dennis had never taken any notice of me. Every time I got near him, I became silent.

At the end of the service I rushed for the door. But I had to wait on the steps while my parents chatted with their friends. Just a little while longer … Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Pearces coming near. Before I could run away, Dennis was right beside me.

I started talking, hoping if I kept it up he wouldn't notice my ugly dress. "I'm going to college in September," I said.

"That's great," Dennis replied. "I got accepted to police academy (學院)."

"Wow!" I said. Somehow I kept the conversation going. The next thing I knew Dennis had asked me out on a date (約會)!

We courted (戀愛) through college, and finally got married. Months after our wedding I asked Dennis if he remembered the day he had first asked me out.

"Certainly I do," he said. "You were always quiet in school. I didn't think you'd be much fun. But you were so lively when we talked on the church steps. I wanted to get to know you better." Maybe that yellow dress wasn't what I would have chosen, but that day it was the perfect dress for me.

1Why did she accept such a dress?

A.Because she was fond of its new pattern.B.Because her mom just brought it for her.

C.Because it was proper to go to church in it.D.Because she understood her mom's love.

2The writer tried to carry the dialogue on, hoping .

A.she would catch other boys' attentionB.Dennis would get her out for a date

C.Dennis wouldn't take notice of her dressD.Dennis's parents could notice her

3The underlined part "had a crush on" in Paragraph 5 probably means " ".

A.loved deeplyB.met by chanceC.looked down onD.worried about

Dear Frank,

You’ve heard the warnings. It’s reported that fifty percent of the teenagers depend on their phones too much. I think you have this problem too. That’s why I think you should give up your phone. Not forever, just for a week. I’m warned that you are developing some bad habits. You keep your phone with you all the time—you even check the basketball scores at the dinner table. It’s not a good idea to use your phone while you are doing homework. You can’t put your heart into your homework at all. And you may make more mistakes when you can’t fully put your heart into it. There are many good reasons to take a break from your phone. Have a try! So what do you say? Are you ready to give up using your phone?

Dad

Dear Dad,

I know you think I depend on my phone too much. But I’m just using technology to help my life to be better. My phone helps me in many ways.

Do you remember that time when the car broke down? I sent a message to tell you that I was going to be safe.

If I didn’t, you would be worried about me. My phone helps me with my homework too. I can take up anything in a second. It’s really hard to be successful today if you don’t have a phone. Social media, games, and apps might seem silly to you, but they help me to keep in touch with my friends. I promise to cut back my phone use, and I won’t use it at the dinner table any more. But giving it up for a week would be a mistake and it wouldn’t change anything in the long term.

Frank.
