My family and I have just returned from a family reunion(團(tuán)聚). Six years ago, my aunt and uncle decided to move to Los Angeles. I was still young when they left so I did not remember them very well. Since moving, they have had two children, a boy and a girl. It was my chance to get to know my family and meet my cousins for the first time.

My uncle now works in the film business. His job is to translate(翻譯) English dialogue into Chinese. Nowadays it is quite common for some American films to have some parts with Chinese. We had some really enjoyable days in Los Angeles. We went to the beach a few times and went on a tour of a film studio.

However, the best part of the trip was learning about my family. I could not believe how similar we all are. It is easy to tell we are a part of the same family. My dad and uncle have a lot in common. They are quite short, like making jokes about their hair loss(缺失), and really enjoying eating seafood.

My mum and aunt are both quite tall with curly hair, and are interested in Beijing Opera and going for long walks. Even my cousin Sunny and I are similar! We both have big eyes and long, straight hair. We like playing the same games and we are all scared of spiders! Also, we both find maths too difficult but are quite good at speaking English. I am so glad we had the Chance to visit Los Angeles. I hope they can visit China in the near future.

When we think of a sandcastle (沙堡), it is usually a beautiful building but it is not suitable to live in. However, two early built sand hotels are built in the cities of Oss and Sneek, in the Netherlands (荷 蘭), during the popular sand sculpture festivals (沙雕節(jié)) every year. People can experience life in them. Here is something useful about the sand hotels.

The developer, Zand Hotel, said the idea to build the huge sand hotels came from the ice hotels. However, visitors to those have to sleep on ice beds in low temperatures and have no electricity or Wi-Fi. But the guests at the sand hotels don’t have to face the difficulties.

That’s because the buildings may be made from sand, but each room has all the things of a common hotel, such as wood beds, showers and toilets. So, they can rest easily. Each room also has running water, windows, electricity and Wi-Fi. It only costs $172 a night, even including a European breakfast and a free tour of the nearby sand sculpture festival.

Building the sand hotels wasn’t easy. It took five weeks and over 2,000,000 pounds of sand to build each room. Not surprisingly, the one-of-a-kind hotels are a huge hit with both locals and visitors. And they have been fully booked since they opened in early May. Unluckily, with the sand festivals drawing to a close, the building will soon have to come crumbling down (坍塌). The one in Sneek will shut its doors on September 29th while the other is planned to close on October 4th. But don’t be sad.The developer already has plans to rebuild the sandcastles in the Netherlands next year, and also plans similar festivals in the U.K. and Germany!
