In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南極洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (惡劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南極條約》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen (速凍) food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七級(jí)以上的) winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

Advice on Doing Your Homework
Never try to work when you are very hungry. If you want to do your homework right after school, you may want to eat something before getting to work. Always do your homework before you get too tired. Don't wait until late in the evening, or the assignment will seem much harder than it really is.
Divide your time into a few parts if you have more than an hour's work. Relax yourself after an hour. However, don't divide it up so much that you can't get anything done. You should be able to work at least half an hour at a time without stopping.
Don't put off(推遲)until the last minute. If you put off doing your homework, you will have it on your mind and you won't enjoy your free time. If you put off until the end of the week or until right before a test. you will have too much to do. A little bit each night, enough to keep up with what is happening each day in school, will take the fear out of tests and keep you on top of it.
Do your homework at the same time every day. This will help you make it a habit--part of your daily work. It will make it easier to do, and it will make your free time more enjoyable as well.

Everybody likes to feel that she or he is special. Sadly, many of us grow up believing that we’re not special at all. We wish that we could be more attractive or better at sports. We wish we had had more money or nicer clothes. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we think we’re not good enough just as we are. In the film. The Tin Man wishes he had a heart. The Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain, and the Lion want courage. Finally, each of them realizes that he already has what he wants.
Nearly all parents want us to be the best we can be. They sometimes try to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They mean well, but the message we usually get is that we’re not good enough. We start to believe that the only way we can be special is by being better than somebody else, but we are often disappointed (失望的). There will always be somebody out there that is better than we are at something. There are a lot of people around who may not be as smart as we are but who are better at sports. Or they may not be as handsome, but they are more successful. It is unthinkable for us to be better than everybody else all the time. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, we all need what we believe will make us better people.
What we don’t understand is that often we already have the very things inside us that we look for. Our parents often forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good enough just as we are. Perhaps no one told them when they were growing up, or maybe they just forgot. Either way, it’s up to us to remind them sometimes that each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are ... is enough!
1.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe how smart we are. B.To talk about your family problems.
C.To explain the importance of being yourself. D.To suggest how people can change their way of life.
2.This article was most probably written by __________.
A.a teenager B.a youth worker C.a teacher D.a parent
3.What does the writer say about our parents?
A.They never compare us to other children. B.They always tell us that we are good enough.
C.They often forget to tell us that we are special. D.They never forget to tell us that we are special.
4.Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.What Makes You Smart B.What Makes You Happy
C.What Makes You Strong D.What Makes You Special
