Walking home from school one day,I saw Dan,a kid from my school,on the other side of the road. I said to myself, "He must be a real nerd," as he was carrying a lot of books. As I continued walking,I saw a group of kids run into Dan,knocking his books out of his arms and pushing him so hard that he fell down. So I ran over to help him. And as we were picking up his books,I saw tears in his eyes.

As I helped him stand up,I said, "Those kids are stupid."He looked at me and said, "Thanks. " There was a grateful smile on his face.

We started talking and soon found that we lived near each other. We talked all the way home. And Dan turned out to be a pretty cool kid. We hung out the whole weekend, and the more I got to know Dan,the more I liked him. Dan and I became best friends.

Over the next four years,he became more popular, and all the kids loved him. In our senior year,Dan got the best grades in our class, and gave a speech at the graduation ceremony.

As Dan was making his speech,he looked at me. "Graduation is a time to thank the people who helped you survive the tough years―your parents, your teachers, but mostly your friends. Being a friend is the best gift you can give. Fm going to tell you a story."I just looked at Dan in amazement as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to drop out of school and run away from home that weekend. Dan talked about how he had emptied his locker and carried all of his books home. He then looked at me and gave me a little smile. " Thankfully,I was saved. My friend saved me from making a terrible mistake." Everyone looked at Dan in silence as he told us how he got through his weakest moment.

A wise old gentleman retired and bought a small but comfortable home near a junior middle school. He spent his first few weeks of his retirement in peace. Then a new school year started. Every afternoon, three young boys came down his street, kicking happily every trash can (垃圾罐) they came across. The crashing noise continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action.

The next afternoon,he walked out to meet the young kids as they walked their way down the street. Stopping them,he said, " You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you show your energy like that. I used to do the same thing when I was your age. I'll give you each a dollar if you promise to come around every day and do your thing."

The kids were very pleased and continued to do their job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old man greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "The day before yesterday,I got a lot of money stolen," he told them.
