Up in the Sky
Take a trip up a hill on a windy day. What is flying high in the sky? It isn’t a bird or a plane. It is a kite!
Kids and adults like flying kites. Long ago, the first kites were made by Chinese people. Then, people around the world began flying kites.
One story tells a man’s hat got lifted off by wind. He had fun chasing(追趕) his hat, so he did it again! His hat became the first kite. Other stories tell that people liked watching leaves on windy days. They tied leaves to strings(線) and watched them fly.
Long ago, kites became important in keeping China protected. A man might be lifted up by a kite while he spied(監(jiān)視) on an enemy. He could use the kite to fly high like a plane. He could also fight from the air!
Kites come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. They are usually made of cloth or paper. A kite might be shaped like a bird, a fish, or just a box. Kites are also painted with colors.
You can use a kite to catch fish. First you tie a fishing line to a kite. Then you put bait(魚(yú)餌) on the line. You watch the kite with hopes as it flies over the water. When you pull the kite down, you might find a fish on your line! Some people think this is more fun than using a fishing pole(桿).
Many countries have special days to honor kites. People make, sell and fly many types of kites. There are several kite festivals in China. The Beijing International Kite Festival is usually held in April every year. People spend all days flying kites. You might see famous fighter kites. People fly these kites quite fast and try to cut other flyer’s lines.
There is much to learn about kites. From long ago in China until now, kites have had many uses. They have been used for spying, fighting, and fishing. But the best way to use a kite is to fly it high for fun!

American English is full of colorful expressions. One such expression is to touch all bases.
There are four bases in baseball – first, second, third and home plate. When a baseball player hits the ball, he must run to each base – in order – and touch it with his foot. It is the only way to get a point. If the player hits the ball and fails to touch all the bases, the point will not be counted.
The importance of touching all the bases was shown at the start of the 1974 baseball seasons.
Hank Aaron was a player with the Atlanta Braves team. He was trying to find the record for hitting the most home runs (全壘打). Aaron needed just one home run to be well matched with the record held by Babe Ruth, the greatest hitter in baseball history. Aaron got that home run the very first time he had a chance to hit the ball. That gave him 714 home runs – the same as Babe Ruth. After that day, baseball fans held their breath every time when it was Hank Aaron’s turn to hit. When would he hit home run number 715?
The wait was not long. In the second week of the season, Aaron again hit the ball over the wall. He had beaten Babe Ruth’s record. But first, he had to run around the four bases. The other players on his team watched carefully to make sure he touched each one.
So, to touch all bases means to do what is necessary to complete an activity.
The expression is used to business and politics. No business deal or political events are really complete until you discuss all the problems involved. Or, as it is said, until you touch all bases.
1.When a baseball player hits the ball, he must ______ to get a point.
A.run to each base freely
B.touch the home plate first
C.touch all the bases with his hands
D.run to each base in order and touch it with his foot
2.When was the importance of touching all the bases shown?
A.At the start of the 1974 baseball seasons.
B.At the end of the 1974 baseball seasons.
C.Before the baseball rules made.
D.In the second week of 1974.
3.Who hit home run number 715?
A.Babe Ruth.
B.Hank Aaron.
C.Babe Ruth’s partner.
D.Hank Aaron’s friend.
4.What does the expression “to touch all bases” mean?
A.To do what is needed to finish an activity.
B.To get a chance to be the greatest hitter.
C.To try your best to set a new record.
D.To solve the problems successfully.

Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn (打哈欠) and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, obviously it’s because we have mirror neurons (神經(jīng)元) in our brains.
Put simply, the presence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains model after it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.
Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: “The hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).
Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning (行使職責(zé)). However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.
Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information about how humans behave, communicate and spend time together. Indeed, it may turn out to be nearly the same important thing for neuroscience as what Einstein’s theory of relativity (相對(duì)論) was for physics. And the next time you have the strong feeling to cough in the cinema when someone else does – well, perhaps you’ll understand why.
1.Mirror neurons can explain ______.
A.why we cry when we are hurt
B.why we cough when we catch a cold
C.why we smile when we see someone else smile
D.why we yawn when we see someone else get up late
2.The word “triggered” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.
A.set off
B.cut off
C.broken out
D.found out
3.We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _______.
A.relate to human behavior and communication
B.decide our knowledge and language abilities
C.result in bad behavior and social disorders
D.control human actions and appearances
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Ways to find mirror neurons.
B.Problems of mirror neurons.
C.Discovery of mirror neurons.
D.Functions of mirror neurons.
