One midnight, a little girl woke up to go to the bathroom. She got up and down her bed, walked to the bedroom door and opened it. She looked outside and walked back, because it was so dark that she was scared.

Her mother said, “Don’t be afraid, honey. Take courage!”

“What’s courage?” she asked, running to her mother’s bed.

“Courage is the brave breath,” her mother answered.

“Mum, do you have courage?”

“Certainly!”

The girl held out her hands, saying, “Mum, please blow some of your courage breath to me.”

After her mother blew out two mouthfuls of breath into her little cold hands, the little girl held her hands nervously , afraid that the “breath of courage” would run away. Then, she walked out of her bedroom towards the bathroom with nothing to fear.

Her mother said to herself, “ It will be nice if someone can blow some kind of “breath” to me. Then I can hold it in my hands too when I feel afraid or lost.”

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. In this way he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and asked God for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked up(哽咽)and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son, but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands. ” For a moment there was silence on the other and of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time”, and hung up.

Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent –– teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were surprised at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That’s when I knew I had to make you proud.”

Sixty years ago, human beings first reached the top of Mount Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West. But the increase in climbers is turning the world’s highest mountain into the “world’s highest junkyard(垃圾場)”.

Every year, more than 700 climbers spend nearly two months on Mount Qomolangma. They have left human waste and all kinds of rubbish, including oxygen bottles, broken tents, and plastic bags, according to Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

“The waste has become a health danger to people in the area since they depend on water from rivers fed by the melting glaciers(融化的冰川),” Sherpa said.

More and more people have realized the danger that Mount Qomolangma is facing and they are now taking active actions. To deal with the problem, Nepal has supported a special team of explorers and volunteers to clean the mountain since 2008. So far they have brought down 15,000kg of rubbish. Nepal also started to ask each climber to bring down 8 kg of rubbish in 2014.

On the Chinese side of the mountain, Tibet(西藏) will collect a cleaning fee of $100-200 (620-1240 yuan) per climber starting from this year. A program named “Mount Qomolangma Action at the Third Pole of the Earth” also started in 2004 to clear up the mountain.

People often say that an Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than in flats, and many people own their homes. They can paint and change them in any way they like. In a crowded city everyone knows that he or she has private space that is only for himself or herself and for invited friends.

People usually like to mark their space. Are you sitting on a beach or a train or in a library? If you are on the beach you may have spread your sands around you; on the train you may have put your coat or a small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may have one corner or chair which is your own.

Once I was traveling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man sitting opposite me had his bag on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was made rather angry. Maybe he thought that he owned the whole table! I took some newspapers out of my bag and put them on his. When I did this he sat up straight at once, opening his eyes wide. I had invaded(侵占)his space! A few minutes later, I took my newspapers off his bag in order to read them. He at once moved his bag to his side of the table.

1.The English call their homes “castles” because ____________.

C. they don’t want to stay with others

D. homes provide them with their own space

2.The word “private in the first paragraph means _____________.

A. 私人的 B. 公共的 C. 相鄰的 D. 隱蔽的

3.According to the passage, if an Englishman is on the beach, he will probably ________ to show his own space to others.

A. cover himself with sands

B. sit in another person’s chair

C. spread sands around him

D. talk loudly with his friends

4.Why did the writer get angry ? Because ____________

A. the man’s bag fell on the writer’s foot.

B. the man’s bag was on the writer’s seat.

C. the man didn’t leave space for the writer on the table.

D. the man’s bag prevented the writer looking out of the window.

5.The writer put his newspapers on the man’s bag in order to ___________.

A. invade the man’s space

B. let the man move his bag to his side

C. take the man’s seat

D. let the man read the newspaper
