In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship. For the next five years, Henson around the world. With the help of the ship’s captain and other members of the crew, Henson learned mathematics, history, geography, and many other .

Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Lieutenant Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to go with him.

The shop owner knew about the young man’s skills and experience on ocean journeys, he introduced Peary to Henson. Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved to be a worthy and smart seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream .

Over the next five years, the two explorers(探險家) made two trips together to the Arctic(北極). However, they were not able to reach the pole either time. The cold, wind, and ice were than either of them had ever imagined.

In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final challenge at reaching the North Pole. With four guides, they made a mad dash straight across the ice. Peary’s feet were so frostbitten(凍僵的) that he had to be pulled on a dogsled. April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.

任務(wù)型閱讀 (共5分,每小題1分)閱讀下面的短文,然后根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,在文后表格的空格中填入一個最恰當?shù)膯卧~。

Different cultures make different families. For example, there are differences in the way Chinese and Americans raise children.

First, Chinese and American families have different attitudes towards independence (獨立). Each Chinese child has been considered to be the apple of parents’ eyes. It is not surprising to see Chinese parents always helping their children with getting dressed, having meals, bathing, and other things. American parents, on the other hand, teach their children how to do things alone from childhood.

Second, most Chinese parents often make their children have extra classes, such as piano, drawing, or singing lessons. Parents want their children to develop in an all-round way and be better students than other children. The problem is that their children may not be interested in these classes. American parents try to respect (尊重) their children’s interests and usually don’t make them do what they don’t like.

Third, there is a difference in the way parents in China and American treat mistakes that children make. Many Chinese people believe in the saying, “Spare the rod, spoil the child (不打不成器).” When Chinese parents see their children make mistakes, they often get very angry, some even hit them instead of making them realize their mistakes. This affects the children’s growth and the forming of their character, and also makes the generations gap (代溝) wide. American parents think it is common for people to make mistakes because mistakes are a part of life. They often say, “It’s OK to make mistakes. Making mistakes helps you learn.” They help their children deal with mistakes by giving them ideas about how to turn mistakes into learning opportunities (機會).

Families in China and America are quite different, and one way may seem better than the other, but it is better to think about whether the parents fit the family or not instead of talking about which one is wrong or right.

People all around the world drink tea. But people have very different ideas about drinking tea in different countries.

In China, for example, people always drink tea when they are getting together. They usually serve the guests with tea. The Chinese drink it at any time of the day at homes or in teahouses. They prefer their tea with nothing else in it.

Tea is also important in Japan. The Japanese have a special way of serving tea called tea ceremony(儀式). It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in Japanese homes.

Another tea-drinking country is England. In England, the late afternoon is “tea time”. Almost everyone has a cup of tea then. The English usually make tea in a teapot and drink it with milk and sugar. They also eat cakes, cookies and sandwiches at tea time. This is the so-called “Afternoon Tea” in Britain.

In the United States, people drink tea mostly at breakfast or after meals. Americans usually use tea bags to make their tea. Making tea with the bags is faster and easier than making tea in teapots. In summer, many Americans drink cold tea—“iced tea”. Sometimes they drink iced tea from cans, like soda.

閱讀短文,判斷下列句子的正(T)誤(F)。

1.The Chinese drink tea at the same time of the day.

2.The Japanese like to drink tea with milk and sugar in it.

3.In Britain, most people enjoy “Afternoon Tea”.

4.Americans usually make their tea with tea bags.

5.The passage is mainly about the history of tea.
