【題目】 Watching American TV and movies is a surprisingly free way to learn English. You learn modern culture, commonly used slang(俚語), improve listening, and most of all, it’s super fun.

The language used in popular TV shows and movies actually represents real life. Sometimes native(母語的)speakers even use new phrases they learn from movies. The slang today is much different from the slang used by even my parents. Real spoken English changes quite quickly and it’s important to know what’s cool now and what sounds old and stupid.

Most people studying English by watching TV and movies make one or two MISTAKES however.

1.Watching with subtitles(譯文對白字幕)

This is a huge mistake because you learn a lot less than you think. Your eyes naturally go to the subtitles and often the translations aren’t great. It’s impossible to translate slang and jokes anyway. Another thing is that your brain is busy reading your own language. This really slows down the learning.

2.Watching stuff(素材資料)

Turning the subtitles off isn’t enough if you don’t understand 100% of the movie or TV show. It’s not enough to get the “general idea”. I’ve watched so many movies and TV shows with people who aren’t from English-speaking countries, and they always miss the real funny parts, because movies and TV shows are designed for English-speaking people. They don’t need anything explained to them but you do. If you are learning English you need to have these slang expressions and jokes explained to you. Then you will totally “get” everything and your English level will improve like crazy.

No matter what your level is, I’m sure you’ll learn something from this. Check it out.

1What’s super fun according to this passage?

A.Learning about modern culture.B.Learning to use common slang.

C.Improving listening.D.Watching American TV and movies.

2________represent the changes of real spoken English.

A.Popular TV shows and moviesB.Slang from popular TV shows and movies

C.Native speakersD.Slang used by my parents

3Why is it a huge mistake for English learners to watch TV or movies with subtitles?

Because ________.

A.the translation isn’t rightB.it slows down your reading

C.no slang or jokes can be translatedD.you learn much less than you think

4Which of the following is NOT right?

A.We should turn off the subtitles when watching TV shows and movies in English.

B.The stuff can help us understand the movies and TV shows totally.

C.We should get the general idea by watching the subtitles.

D.Because we are not English speakers, we need something explained to us.

5We will miss the real funny parts of the TV shows and movies if we ________.

A.don’t understand the English slang or the jokesB.watch the stuff about the shows and movies

C.improve our English like crazyD.have these slang expressions and jokes explained to us

【題目】 London’s Chinese community(社區(qū)) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limhouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limhouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However, London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.

After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled(定居) in a different area a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.

At first, the new immigrants(移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.

As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.

1Why did many Chinese immigrants come to London in the 1950s?

C.sailors and farmersD.restaurant workers

3Where is London’s Chinatown now?
