Transcript

Gordon: Welcome to the show. I'm sure everyone will have something to say about today's topic: Understanding the opposite sex. Boys like computers and football, while girls like talking and shopping. Is that true? Or is it nonsense? Let's hear from our first caller, Laura.

Laura: I think girls like to chat and talk about everything. This helps us develop better language skills. In my school, all the best students at languages are girls.

Gordon: Well, research does suggest that girls have better language abilities. These can be seen even at the age of three, when girls can express opinions better and know double the number of words as boys.

Lanni: I like shopping with friends and looking for clothes together.

Gordon: In general, girls have a more visual memory. Perhaps that is why they like shopping. They remember colours and shapes better, and also names and faces.

Joe:My mother keeps telling me that my room is a mess, but my sister's bedroom is always tidy.

Gordon: Girls can usually record details better, like the order and position of things and furniture in a room. So, when any of those are not in their place, girls can notice at once.

Nathan: Boys are stronger than girls. Girls often need help with carrying heavy objects. We can run faster too.

Gordon: Well, boys do have proportionally( 成 比 例 地 ) more muscle for their body weight. In general, they can carry more weight and can move more quickly than girls of the same size.

Julius: We have better eyesight than girls. I can see the number of the bus that is coming long before my sister can.

Gordon: That's true. Boys tend to have better long-distance vision than girls. However, we often don't see things that are right under our noses!

An ant is saved by a pigeon, and almost immediately returns the favor.

One day an ant found a grain of corn and decided to take it home. He held it very tight, and hurried as fast as he could, so that nobody would take the grain of corn from him. There was a river on the way home, but the ant, in a hurry, had forgotten about it, and he fell in, corn and all.

The corn slipped from his mouth and went to the bottom of the river. The ant stayed on top of the water and worked hard to find a place to get out. But after a while, the ant began to be afraid that he was out of breath.

A pigeon came to the river to drink, and she saw the ant crying for help in the water. She decided that she would help the little fellow. She took a long, dry piece of grass and dropped it so that it fell near the ant. He climbed on to the grass and soon got out. The ant caught his breath, and then thanked the pigeon for saving him.

There was a boy near the river with a gun. The ant saw him walking up nearer and nearer to the pigeon. Hurrying as fast as he could, the ant climbed up the boy’s leg and gave him a hard bite.

The boy dropped his gun and cried out, and the pigeon saw him and flew to safety. Each had saved the other. When the pigeon saved the ant she did not know that the ant would ever be able to do anything for her in return. Each was happier because of what each did for the other.

I was going back to work to finish a few things one evening, and my two children were busy sewing (縫紉) things on the sewing machine. My 11-year-old daughter was going to help her older brother make a little cushion (抱枕). I left and in a few hours returned to find a mess in the kitchen and front room while both children were sitting in front of the television. Having had a long day, I was very short with my greeting to them. But then I noticed the material they had used for the cushion. I had bought it to make a blanket. Not stopping to listen to them, I shouted at the children and explained how angry I was at what they had done.

My daughter listened to me timidly, not trying to say anything for herself at all, but the pain could be seen on her face. She went to her room quietly and spent some time alone before she came out to say good night and once again apologize for the mistake she had made. A few hours later, as I was preparing to go to bed, there on my bed lying a beautiful little cushion, with the words “I LOVE MOM”. Next to it was a note apologizing again.

To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I think of how I reacted and still feel the pain of my actions. I then went to my daughter and apologized for my actions. I display the cushion on my bed with great pride and use it as a reminder that nothing in this world is greater than a child's love.
