We all wish we could have just one more hour of sleep.

For lucky high school students in England, they’re now going to reset their alarm(鬧鐘) and get one more hour of sleep. Instead of starting school at 9 a.m., students will begin their school day at 10 a.m.

This is part of a huge study by Oxford University. The experiment( 實驗) will see if later classes can help them get good marks.

“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager, "a sleep researcher Colin Epsie told The Telegraph. “When you get bad marks, your parents think it is because you're lazy, and everything would be OK if you could get to sleep earlier. Science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”

In 2009, some scientists did other similar experiments. They found that 19% students got better marks in Maths and Science.

Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don’t all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks (星巴克) coffee shops spread across the country.

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.

Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing (市場營銷).

In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (濃咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.

However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have been closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries were closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the “feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.

1.The underlined word “ran” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.

A. closed B. managed C. left D. sold

2.According to the passage, which is the right order for the following sentences?

a. Schultz helped to make Starbucks a huge coffee company.

b. Starbucks began as a small coffee company in Seattle in the USA.

c. Schultz went to Seattle to learn about the company and later worked for it.

d. Schultz noticed Starbucks ordered lots of special coffee makers.

A. a-b-d-c B. c-a-b-d C. b-d-c-a D. d-c-a-b

3.Why were so many Starbucks closed in small areas?

A. Because the coffee in these places was too expensive.

B. Because the style of the coffee stores seems the same.

C. Because people like to drink coffee at home with friends.

D. Because there were too many coffee shops in one place.

4.Which of the following shows the right structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)

A. B. C. D.

There are many stories and poems about the Moon in Chinese history. And nowadays scientists send spaceships to the Moon. Why? Because people are always interested in the Moon and want to know more about it. Here is some information (信息) about it. Let’s see it together.

The Moon looks beautiful and bright at night. It is far away from the Earth and if you want to get to the Moon, it will take you about 6 months to get there by car at 95km per hour.

There is no gravity on the Moon, so people can enjoy floating there. If you weigh (有……重) 68kg on Earth, you will weigh only 11kg on the Moon.

There are many interesting places such as craters (隕石坑), mountains, and lava plains (熔巖平原) on the Moon. There is no air on the Moon, so people can’t breathe on it.

On Earth, the day is usually warm and the night is cool. And there are four different seasons in a year. But on the Moon, the temperature is very high during the day and very low at night. And a foil day on the Moon, from the sunrise to the next, lasts about 29.5 Earth days on average (平均).

The Moon doesn’t have its own light. It looks bright because it can reflect (反射) light from the Sun. When the Moon moves around the Earth, it gets different light from the Sun. So we find its size often changes.

1.Why are there many stories and poems about the Moon according to the passage?

A. Because it is a symbol (象征) of beauty.

B. Because people in the past loved it.

C. Because people have an interest in it and want to know more-about it.

2.If you are 45kg on Earth, how much will you weigh on the Moon?

A. Less than 5kg.

B. About 7kg.

C. 9kg.

D. Over 10kg.

3.What can we know about the Moon?

A. People can go to the Moon by car now.

B. People can live on it easily.

C. There are four seasons on it.

D. If you stay on the Moon for two days, you will spend about fifty-nine days on Earth.

4.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

A. The Moon. B. The Earth.

C. The Sun. D. The light.

5.Why does the writer write the passage?

A. To tell us the way to the Moon.

B. To show us some facts about the Moon.

C. To tell us the differences between the Earth and the Moon.

D. To tell us some interesting stories about the Moon.
