This happened in London. It was November and the weather was very wet and cold. A Frenchman had caught a very bad cold. He coughed day and night, so he decided to go and get some medicine for his cough. As he did not know much English, he took out his dictionary and looked up the word “cough”. “For your cow?” asked the man, “are you a farmer?”

“A farmer?” said the Frenchman in surprise, “What makes you think I'm a farmer? I come from Paris. I'm not a farmer.”

“But where is your cow?”

“It's here!” answered the Frenchman. He put his hand on his chest(胸口) and began to cough. “Here it is,” he said, “I've a very bad ‘cow’ here.”

Do you understand “OMG” when you receive a piece of text message like this? Its meaning is “oh my god”. Have you seen Brb (be right back), gr8 (great), cya (see you)–it’s a lot easier to use abbreviations (縮寫) when we text, isn’t it? But while we might think nothing of it, there’s an ongoing discussion that text messaging can have a bad influence on people’s grammar. Many believe the abbreviations are giving students bad habits when it comes to spelling and punctuation (標(biāo)點(diǎn)).

Some teachers say that texting and social networking cause students to be lazy when writing. A study showed that young adults who often use text messaging find it rather difficult to turn back to correct grammar when needed.

But another view is that text messaging has no influence at all. Many people consider it to be a language of its own. We could compare it to a foreign language which students learn. This doesn’t have any influence on their native language.

Whether it’s bad or not, it seems that text language is becoming very popular. According to another study, 64 percent of teens said they used informal (非正式的) “text language” in their writing.

But it’s not just a matter of language. Students who text a lot during class may have difficulty paying attention. In another study, students were asked to complete a questionnaire on how many text messages they sent and received during class. On average, students sent more than two text messages during classes lasting 50 to 75 minutes. The study showed that students who often text during classes can’t easily keep their attention on the lesson, which will surely harm their learning.

Topic: Use abbreviation 1. ____ texting

One day while driving from my home to work. I noticed a car in front of me had a wobbly(不穩(wěn)定的)wheel. It was clear that the wheel had been changed recently and had not been fixed correctly. On a slow road this would not show much of a problem but I knew a highway was coming soon. There the traffic would move much faster and the driver would be in danger as the wheel could come off at that speed.

I was driving a large jeep at the time and the car in front was a small one driven by a young lady on her own. So as I tried to flash(閃)my lights and wave her to pull over, I was worried that she wouldn’ t pull over on the road side when she found in her mirror a single man chasing(追) her down in a jeep and waving for her to pull over.

Thankfully. she trusted more in the good nature of people and pulled over where I could explain the problem. She said the wheel was changed only the night before and that she would pull into the nearest garage(修車間)where the repairman had tools to fix the wheel correctly.

My belief is that the act of kindness was hers and not mine. How so? Well, it was she who chose to believe in the possibility that people are good over the belief that bad things would come from being waved over to the side of the road by strangers.

I am glad I was able to wave her down in time and so a serious accident might have been avoided. But I am even happier that she believed in a stranger.

1.The writer worried about the lady because .

A. she was driving a second-hand car

B. a traffic accident might happen to her

C. a single man was chasing her down

D. she drove faster than any other car

2.Why did the lady pull over on the side road ?

A. Because she found something wrong.

B. Because she thought the road not safe.

C. Because the writer shouted at her.

D. Because the writer gave her some signs.

3.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Trusting in the Kindness of Strangers

B. A Wobbly Wheel of a Car

C. A Lady Who Was Saved

D. Accident That Didn’ t Happen
