A. If the new species (物種) is too strong or uses too much of the resources (資源) in the habitat.
B. We often talk about how important it is to take good care of ourselves and our planet
C. When farmers cut down trees, tigers can no longer hide and hunt
D. Steve says that we can help by creating more space for animals and plants
E. A species can become endangered for different reasons
                                                          Are we endangered?
Steve Jones is an environmental expert who tries to keep animals and plants from becoming endangered.
"We are not alone in the world. We human beings could not survive (生存) without all the plants and animals
around us. 1           , but we don't always do as we say," Steve says as he takes us on a tour of Green Park
in Birmingham. Many of the earth's plants and animals have already died out, and several other species are
endangered. If we want to live a better life and have a bright future, we must learn to act in ways that do not
harm other living things.
If we know more about what causes endangerment, we may be able to take measures (采取措施) before
it is too late. 2           . Animals and plants must have a habitat, or home, which is comfortable and clean,
and where there is enough food and other resources. They are all used to their environment; that is, they have
learnt how to live successfully in their habitat. When the habitat of a species is changed or destroyed, the
animal or plant had to either adapt to the change or find a new home. If this is not possible, the species becomes
endangered. If a new species arrives, the animals and plants of the habitats must change again. 3          , some
of the original (原始的) species may become endangered. A species may also die out if humans or other animals
use too much of a plant or kill too many animals.
The good news is that there is a lot we can do to help. First of all, we need to learn more about animals,
plants and the environment. Experts tell us that we need to think about what we can do to keep animals and
plants from becoming endangered. 4           :"You can plant a tree or build a birdhouse. It is simple but useful."
Steve also wants us to think about what we do: "Please don't pollute the environment." If we find out more
about what we should do, we can help Steve and others like him keep. animals and plants and ourselves from
becoming endangered.

Soda is popular all over the world. People, especially young children, like drinking it very much because
it tastes good. Some of them drink at least one can or bottle every day. But drinking it not only costs too
much money, but also is bad for people's health in some ways. If you drink too much soda, you will probably
become too fat, have a toothache. Even if you don't mind your money, you must at least care about your health.
Why is soda unhealthy? A study at a university has been made for years. It shows us how bad it is. First,
soda can lower your body's PH levels. Second, soda can raise insulin levels (胰島素水平), lead to high blood
pressure (血壓), heart disease, weight gain and so on. Do you want your teeth to stop falling out? Stop
drinking soda! Do you want your bones (骨骼) to get harder? Stop drinking soda! Do you want to improve
your immune system (免疫系統(tǒng))? Stop drinking soda! Do you want to lose weight? Stop drinking soda!
But what should you drink instead? Water is good for your health. Drinking tea is a good idea, too. Anyhow, you should stop drinking soda from now on.

Since 1850, the temperature of Earth's surface has increased about 0.6°C. Scientists predict it may warm
much more by the end of this century. Who's turning up the heat? Well, it seems that we are! Some of this
global warming may be natural. However, nearly all scientists now agree that most of it is due to peoples
actions. Over the past 150 years, we've added huge amounts of certain gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2)
to the air
. These gases can keep heat near Earth's surface, so more carbon dioxide means more heat is kept
near Earth's surface.Global warming may change the weather in ways that lead to more severe storms, floods
and droughts.
We add carbon dioxide to the air when we burn things, especially fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are energy sources
formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Coal, oil, and natural gas are all
fossil fuels. People in the United States and other countries started bunting large amounts of fossil fuels more
than a century ago. The amount d fossil fuels being burned each year has been increasing worldwide. The
more we burn, _____________________.
What can we do to help? Nowadays to live a low-carbon life is quite popular in the world. Low-carbon
means to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. Saving energy and reusing are the key words. In fact, even
the simplest everyday activities can make our lives low-carbon.
1. What problem can global warming cause?(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題)

Did you see snow in your hometown last winter? Did you feel it was warmer than before? "There have been
21 warm winters in China since 1986," said scientists. They also said that in the past 100 years, as the global
(全球的) temperatures went up by 0.74 °C, the temperature in North China has climbed 1.4 °C in only 50
years.
China needs to take quick action to cut carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) emission (排放), because it's the main
reason for global warming. The good news is that China has seen the importance of going green. China set the
goal of cutting energy use by 20 and pollution emission by 10 in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
Can you slow global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps to cut the amount of carbon
dioxide that is sent out into the air.
Here are some pieces of advice to help you save the earth.
Wear used clothes. Wearing your brother's, sister's or dad's old T-shirt means you save the energy.
Change your light bulbs (燈泡). Use energy-saving light bulbs. And don't forget to turn off the lights when
you leave a room and turn off your television and computer when they are not in use!
Ride the bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.
Say no to plastic bags. The next time your parents go to the market, ask them to use baskets
Open a window. Don't use the air conditioner (空調(diào)), and let some fresh air in. When you have to use the
conditioner, set the temperature higher in the summer and lower in the winter to save energy.
Make small changes in your daily life. Don't use paper cups, bags and boxes. It's time for all of us to do
something to save the earth.

your feet than in any other part of your body. There are about sixty muscles in your face; you use twenty of
them to smile but forty to frown (皺眉). Your heart beats over 100,000 times each day. You are really amazing!
The human body is a complex machine. From the day we are born our bodies grow and change because of
our environment, diet and habits. The body has many different organ (器官) systems and parts that work
together to allow us to breathe, move, see, talk, and eat food all at the same time. Most of the time we are
unaware (預(yù)兆) of what is happening in our bodies; usually it's only when we get sick or feel pain that we
notice.
Many people do not take enough care of their complex machines. Bad habits like smoking, drinking too much
alcohol (酒精), and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause health problems. People who
worry a lot or have busy jobs often don't get enough sleep, or don't eat properly. We also damage our bodies by

Different from popular thoughts, colds are not caused by bad weather. Colds are caused by viruses
(病毒) in the body, and you are better out on the snowy day than you are in a warm room, with your
friends, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a chill (寒冷) when you are coming down
with a cold, you are already sick. A chill is an early sign of the cold.
The virus can spread through air when a cold-sufferer (感冒患者) coughs or sneezes. Surprisingly,
this is not the most usual way of spreading, Many studies have now shown that most colds are "caught"
by hands. A cold-sufferer rubs her nose, so spreading the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit
her. They shake their hands. The friend then gets something to eat by hand, and several days later she
catches a cold. Although some parents pick up their children's tissues (紙巾) and carefully throw them
away, they fail to wash their hands. They'll catch the colds, too.
Cold viruses can also be spread by objects, for example, telephones, plates. The cold-sufferer as well
as other members of the house, by washing their hands often, will stop the viruses from spreading in a way.
