Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in the history of the earth. This year is your last chance your lifestyle to save the earth.

Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth’s water and air, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour(倒) dangerous chemical(化學(xué)物品) and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.

By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted. People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids(液體). Scientists said that in the future there might be too many people on the earth. But not enough was done.

So by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrible wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.

By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go? Nowhere. And everywhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our space ships. We are still looking for a place to call our home.

So it is up to you to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late.

1.Which problem is NOT talked about in Paragraph 2?

A. Water B. Air C. Lifestyle D. Food

2.The underlined word ‘scarce’ means ‘______’ in Chinese.

A. 昂貴的 B. 充足的 C. 缺乏的 D. 特殊的

3.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Only a few people changed their lifestyle in the 20th century.

B. There was no clean water for people to drink by the year 2200.

C. All the fish died because of the pollution by the year 2300.

D. We found a new home in another planet by the year 2400.

4.What’s the best title of the passage?

Wang Fei,a Chinese student, and Mary,an American student studying Chinese in China, were in a supermarket. They saw a young man walking down the stairs. In his hurry,he missed the last two steps and fell onto the ground. He tried to stand up while people around him laughed.Luckily,he seemed to be OK.

Mary found Wang Fei smiling a little and was not happy about it. “Tell me, Fei, how could people laugh when someone fell like that? Why didn’t they go up and ask him if he was hurt?”

Wang Fei said, “Because they knew he wasn’t hurt too much.”

“But I still don’t understand.A fall is a fall.In my culture, people would never laugh!”

This is an example. The Chinese and the westerner will think and act differently when seeing such a thing.Chinese people are used to laughing or smiling.Very often the person who is in embarrassing(困窘的)situation would also laugh or smile to get out of it.However,if someone gets hurt seriously,it will not be a laughing matter any more.People will help him or her instead.

But,in that case,a westerner will rush over and help the person get up.If a westerner falls,he or she, like a Chinese person, may try to make a joke if he or she is not hurt.If two close friends are walking together, and one falls but clearly isn't hurt,a common joke is to say “Have a nice trip”.

So different people have different habits and different countries have different cultures

1.Wang Fei and Mary think and act in the same way if they see a young man falling down, don’t they?

2.Why didn't people go up and ask the young man if he was hurt?

3.What do Chinese people often do when they find themselves in embarrassing situation?

4.What is a westerner likely to do when he or she sees someone fall down?

5.What might Mary say to Wang Fei if he fell but clearly was not hurt?

Policemen do cry. Movies and television show that policemen are tough and hard. But policemen do cry.

Ken Knapcik had been a policeman in Chicago for 20 years when one of his fellow policeman was shot during a drug arrest, and died. Shortly after, he returned home after work to find a note from his 15-year-old daughter on the dining table.

Dad

This poem came directly from heart. I love you so much. It scares me that you go out every day and risk everything to provide us with all that we have. I am also very proud of you. I wrote this to express how much I love you and how lost I’d be without you.

Laura

P.S. Hey, be careful out there.

Laura’s poem was called “The Best Policeman.” It was dedicated (獻(xiàn)給) “To all the policeman in the world who have daughters who love them with all their hearts, especially to my father had been shot. Knapcik stood alone as he read the poem. “It took me several minutes.” he said. “ I’d got through part of it and have to stop before I could go on. I was weeping(哭泣). She had never told me she was scared.” He took the poem to work the next day and showed it to his fellow officers. “I ‘ve never seen so many grown men cry. Some couldn’t even finishing reading it.”

In many western schools, sports day is a big event. Children take part in competitive (競(jìng)爭(zhēng)性的)sports and try to break school records and take the first place.

Sports days, or sports meetings, are usually held in the warmer seasons, either at the beginning or the end of the school year. They are also called field days. Primary school sports days are fun. They usually have activities such as the egg and the spoon race and the sack race. Other events include the skipping race (跳繩) and the three-legged race. In middle and high schools, sports days include many of the common track and field events (田徑項(xiàng)目). They are more serious and competitive than primary school ones.

Students' parents and other relatives also come to the school on sports days. They watch children play. Many schools in the West have "mothers and fathers" races for parents to take part in!

Although sports days are exciting, they also have some problems. According to some reports in the USA, sports days have become too competitive to be good for students. Some parents put too much pressure on the children. Some schools don't have "mothers and fathers" races any more as there is much fighting and cheating.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題。(10分)

1.What do children try to do when they take part in sports meetings?

2.When are sports days usually held in the school year?

3.What are primary school sports days like?

4.Who would come to the school to watch children play on sports days?

5.Do sports days have problems in the writer’s opinion ?
