One of the fastest passenger trains in the world is the Euro Star. It travels the distance between London and Paris in just over two and a half hours. The same journey which used to take five or six hours and always involved(包含) a slow boat crossing. If you take the Euro Star, you can leave London Waterlooat 4 o’clock on a Friday afternoon and be in the centre of Paris at 6:35, in time for dinner.
One of the most exciting things about Euro Star is that it goes through a tunnel under the sea. This is called the Channel Tunnel, and goes between Folkestone in England and Sangate in France. The tunnel is 31 miles long, and cost $21 billion to build. This part of the journey takes about 20 minutes and there are two other tunnels that people can get out of quickly if there is a fire or an accident(事故).
The trains have a top speed of 180 mph (300 km p hr), and run on special tracks(軌道). It can go much faster on these tracks. The trains are very comfortable, just like all the other trains, and you can also buy a lot of food and drink in the restaurant car. But the trains travel so fast, people can’t really see anything out of the window, especially on the French side where it speeds up quite a lot.

Starfish(海星) are not real fish at all. They are animals in the sea.
A starfish looks like a star. Most of them have five arms. Some have even more. At the tip of each arm is an eye. A starfish has as many eyes as it has arms!
In many ways, this animal is different. If an arm is lost, it can grow a new one. If a starfish is cut in two, each piece will grow into a whole new starfish!
Starfish are not good to eat. Dry ones are very pretty. When children find them beside the sea, they like to take them home.

I saw an accident this morning when I was standing at the corner of Green Street. A woman with her son was driving a red sports car down Green Street very fast. While she was driving, she was talking on her mobile phone. At the same time, a man was driving a blue truck along Fifth Street very slowly. While he was driving, he was drinking a bottle of cola and eating a sandwich. While the man was driving through the crossing, the woman in the sports car didn’t stop at the traffic lights. As a result, the car hit the truck. Both the woman and the man were very angry. While they were shouting at each other, the police came. Luckily, they were not badly hurt.

Do you have any special methods(方法) you use to help you do better on a test? How well you do is often a matter of how well prepared you are. Here are some ways to make sure you’re at your best on test days.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,完成下列表格,每空一詞。
Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people have certain qualities, which others do not.
The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(樂觀). If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as people who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation(動(dòng)機(jī)) is a key to getting success. If you do not have an aim, then you won’t work hard and put your performance under the microscope(顯微鏡) to make sure that every detail is right.
Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity---thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.
Reading is another to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have got success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have got amazing success in their areas of business.
Practicing is equally important if you want to be successful because practice makes perfect. Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow. If you feel confident about what you do, this confidence will make other people believe in you as well. Your workmates will be happy to work with you, and your boss will give you more responsibility(責(zé)任). Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eye and smile confidently.
Success is yours for the taking! Cheers!
