October 12, 2005 was a special day for 11-year-old Nie Tianxiang. That day she went to the Beijing Aeronautics Control Center(北京航天飛行控制中心)with her mum to celebrate her father's 41st birthday. Her father, Shenzhou VI astronaut Nie Haisheng, was in earth orbit(軌道). At nine o'clock that morning, Nie Haisheng and his partner Fei Junlong were launched aboard China's second manned(載人的)spaceship.

Two years ago China sent his first space hero(英雄), Yang Liwei, into the sky aboard Shenzhou . This turned a new leaf in history as China became the third country to mount manned space missions, after the US and Russia.

But this time China took another big step forward by launching two astronauts instead of one. The two were to stay in space longer, about four to five days, compared with Yang's 21 hours. In Shenzhou , Nie and Fei can move freely in two capsules(艙), while Yang Liwei had only one capsule. The two astronauts also have new tasks(任務). They keep records of any problems to tell scientists how to do better the next time. They also do scientific experiments(科學實驗)in space. This is only the second step of China's space program. The country plans to build its first space station in the future. Longer plans include(包括)a landing on the moon. When Nie Tianxiang talked to her father by telephone and sangHappy Birthday, TV viewers(觀眾)on earth saw the space hero slightly wipe his eyes.
