On a cold December morning, my mother and I were walking home from pizza store. We were  1  warmly and equipped with the video___2___ we had been trying to watch. I was feeling a little tired  3  I was carrying our shopping bags of snacks and the video.
They were so  4  that I decided to throw away some of them. So I started to walk towards the dustbin __5___I noticed a poor man stepping out of the restaurant in front of us. He held a paper bag with his dirty hand. He  6  over to another nearby dustbin and started looking  7  it.
I suddenly felt very upset. I know this man would take all he could get, so I walked up to him and  8  the drink and some snacks to him. The man, with lines on his face and wrinkles(皺紋) on his forehead, looked up in  9  and took what I gave him.
A huge smile spread across his face and this made  10   feel indescribable satisfaction(滿意). I felt like I couldn’t be happier with __11___, but then he said, “Wow, first someone gives me this sandwich, then this drink, and now some tasty food, this is my daughter’s 12 day!”
He thanked me happily and started off on his bike. I even heard him whistling(吹哨) a song as he  13  away.
I now understand what is meant by the saying “giving is getting”. Everyone in the world needs help, everyone can  14  help and everyone will be helped by something kind.
The image(圖像) of that man’s happiness  15  by my small gift appears in my mind every time I have the chance to do something nice.

A recent study offers a picture of how dangerous it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal(致命的)accident as a teenager driving alone. However, the possibility of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional (added) passenger.
It was also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late night accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to help solve the problem is to have states setting up so-called graduated licensing systems(等級(jí)執(zhí)照制). A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove that he/she is able to drive in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with a limited number of passengers, before graduating to full driving on his own. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place. The systems have reduced teenage driver crashes(相撞), according to recent studies.

A.Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p.m.
B.A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.
C.Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.
D.A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.
小題2:According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly because __.
A.their preference for driving at night
B.their lack of driving experience
C.their careless way of driving
D.their driving with passengers

Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure (失敗) becomes an experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards(標(biāo)準(zhǔn)). When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to blame (責(zé)怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honour list on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick consolations (安慰), prize or say, “It doesn’t matter.” Because it does. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” Don’t blame anyone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.

D.His teammates are not good enough.
