Do you know how to write an English letter?
When we write a letter in Chinese, we always put the date at the end of the letter. But it is different in English. We have to put it on the top of the right corner. And above the date, we also write the number of our house and the names of our street, city and country. To begin the letter, we always use words like “Dear sir” “Dear Mr /Miss/ Mrs…”.To the end of the letter, we usually use words like “Yours” “Yours ever” or “Truly yours”.
It is also different to write an English envelope. If you write to an Australian friend named Jane Shute, write your name and address on the top of the left corner and write hers in the middle.

Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995, by Dr Madan Kataria. “Children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr Kataria. “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing — it’s the universal (共同的) language.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 worldwide.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects (影響)of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLS School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to the nearest club in the south of London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class. I had no interest in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid (愚蠢的). Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands (拍手) and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha” while looking at each other. Although we couldn’t tell the differences between fake laughter and real laughter, they still produced the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes, everybody there was laughing for real and some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was shocked by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing.

What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(產品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.
In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升級).
Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities(慈善團體) or people who need them. In America, when people say ‘man’s best friend’, they don’t mean another person. Instead, they are talking about a lovely animal—a dog! These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give joy to people’s lives. Some people even leave all their money to their pets when they die!
Animals can help people, too. You can teach dogs to be the ‘eyes’ for blind (失明的) people or ‘ears’ for deaf (聾的) people. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, they bring animals into hospitals for ‘visits’.
Americans have ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ in the first week of May. There are many pet shows during the week. Even if you don’t live in America, you can also show your love to animals. How? First think about how animals make your life richer (更豐富). If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it nice food. If you don’t have a pet, be kind to
animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don’t kick it. Just leave it alone, or make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to animals, try to stop them. As people, we must protect (保護) animals because they can’t speak for themselves.

He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got from the dock at his family's cabin on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch(鱸魚)with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(魚餌)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.
When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a perch . The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. Then the father lit a match(火柴) and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.--- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
"You'll have to put it back, son," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy.
"There will be other fish," said his father.
"Not as big as this one," cried the boy.
He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could know everything by his father's clear voice that the decision could not be changed. He slowly worked the hook(鉤) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father's cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
He was right. He has never again caught such a magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish---again and again---every time he comes up against a question of ethics(道德規(guī)范).
小題1:When did the story happen?
A.Early morningB.Late afternoonC.Late nightD.In the bass season
小題2: Why did the father ask his son to put the perch back?
A.Because the father disliked the perch.
B.Because the father was afraid of being fined.
C.Because the ethics must be observed.
D.Because the son was more experience in fishing than his father.
小題3:When does the architect (the father’s son) think of that perch put back?
A.When he takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
B.When he builds many famous buildings.
C.When he pays a visit to his old father.
D.When he faces some problems about ethics.
小題4:Which word can not be used to describe the boy’s father?
A.honestB.unselfishC.seriousD.generous
小題5:From the passage, we can learn _________.
A.how we can get the handsome fish
B.how we master some skills of going fishing
C.how we understand our parents’ words is very important
D.how we do things in good and right ways.
