A group of high school students from the United States has planted hope by cleaning up an empty lot(一塊地) in their neighborhood.
The students are from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. The empty lot, which is owned by a 1ocal bank, was filled with grass and poison ivy(毒葛). As a project for the school’s biohealth(生物健康) class, eight students decided to turn the empty lot into a space that will improve the mental(心里的) and emotional(情感的) health of people who live near it.
They first came up with a design, did research and created 3D models of their plans. Ideas were then presented and the school leaders picked the winning plans. Finally, the students brought those plans to life.
Now when you walk into the lot, you can see a wood walkway leading to a purple iron bench. A few beautiful plants are already in the ground. There is also a hopscotch(跳房子游戲) board that is painted bright blue. A wall painting with the words “Love” and “Peace” has taken shape on a back fence, decorated with the students’ handprints. The rest of the fence was painted grey to cover plain wood.
The students said they painted the bench purple because they found that purple has a comforting feeling for people. They thought kids could go there and sit together, communicate with each other in peac and stay out of trouble.
As for the hopscotch board, it was set up for a group of eight to ten school-age kids who lived in the neighborhood but had nowhere to play.
It gives the neighborhood a little hope and a little beauty, “said Lyle Jenkins, a member of the Neighborhood Network.” A lot of people love the neighborhood and have great hopes for things getting better.

“Sometimes you just get a strict teacher. Instead of letting others know that this isn’t your favorite class, make an effort to show your teacher you are doing your best.”
—Jocelyn Howard, 16
“Learn to put your activities in order of importance. School comes first, and if you just study as soon as you get home, it’s OK. You can also relax and play computers or do other things you enjoy. But don’t lose yourself in just getting by. Try hard! And don’t be afraid to get help from teachers.”
—April Madlangbanyan, 17
“If you have trouble getting along with a specific teacher, pray about it. Ask God to help you see that teacher through HIS EYES, not your own. And talk with that teacher. Good communication can strengthen any relationship-even with a hard-to-get-along-with teacher.”
—Lisa Shaw, 21
“Being a good student means being organized. Remember to bring all your supplies, everything to each class every day. Make sure that you’ll never skip (逃) class. And when you're in class, really pay attention! Don’t let yourself daydream or write notes to friends. Completing your homework on time is also important.”
—Victoria Walsh, 16
“When you’re having trouble getting along with a certain teacher, stay calm! You may not agree with him or her, but you’ve got to remember the teacher is the authority (權(quán)威) figure. So make sure that you’re respectful and open-minded. Ask for a specific time when the two of you can talk. Explain yourself and address (探討) the problem, not the teacher.”
—Amanda Baken, 18
“Being a good student means studying often, not just cramming (填鴨式的用功) before a test. Identify (識(shí)別) your weak areas. For example, maybe you don’t have good reading skills or it’s hard for you to take notes. Once you identify what your weakness is, ask for help in these specific areas. Be willing to go in early or stay after school to get extra help. Go into the school year knowing that being a good student will require time and effort!”
—Tiffany Irving, 20

Fashion treadmill desks (跑步機(jī)辦公室) might actually help improve job performance after employees get used to working while walking, according to new research.
A yearlong study of workers at a company St. Paul, Minn, found that the productivity of 40 treadmill users dropped at first because they were unable to master typing and operating a mouse while walking at a speed of up to two miles per hour.
But within four to six months, measures (測(cè)量) of performance-quality, the amount of work done, and the quality of interactions(互動(dòng)) with workmates rose gradually, according to weekly surveys. At the end of the survey period, workers with treadmill desks improved their performance, which was 0.69 points higher than that before the project began.
For tasks like solving problems or taking conference calls, “ A little bit of walking is useful because it means there’s more blood flow to the brain,” said Avner Ben-Ner, a professor at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and an author of the study. “ You get more oxygen (氧氣) and it increases the ability to think .”
Treadmill desks have got attention because of research which showed the negative (負(fù)面的,消極的)effects of sedentary lifestyles and jobs that leave workers sitting all day. But data on the effectiveness of the desks has been relatively rare.
There are other downsides (不利方面) , as The Wall Street Journal wrote last year, including the possibility of falls and injuries.
Mr. Ben-Ner noted that treadmill users need some time to get used to the ergonomics (人體工程學(xué)) of walking while working, including the proper desk height. His team provided no training to employees, and he said that employers who provide such desks should offer help to get users comfortable on the machines.
“This wouldn’t be very good for people who use a needle for their jobs,” he said. “ But everyone who does brain work knows that if you need fresh ideas, taking a walk helps.”
1.According to the passage, fashion treadmill desks offer users many advantages EXCEPT to_______.
A. improve their quality of work B. increase their amount of work
C. make their health become better and better D. keep good relationships with workmates
2.Which of the following does Mr. Ben-Ner agree?
A. People can do different kinds of work when walking on treadmill.
B. The treadmill desks are fit for people solving difficult problems.
C. The more oxygen you get, the better your mood is.
D. A little walk can make your brain work more actively.
3.The underlined part “sedentary “in Paragraph 6 probably means leading a life with ____________.
A. much sitting B. daily stress C. no money D. great worry
