In China, people usually set off firecrackers to celebrate Spring Festival. But this year seemed very quiet. It was really different. A man called Zhang Wei was asked by a reporter in an interview. He said that his friends and he hadn’t set off a single firecracker.
“We all suffered from last month’s smog(霧霾). If we don’t call an end to the firecracker, the environment will get worse and worse during the holiday.” said Zhang Wei. He put up a notice in his community in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province. In the notice, he called on more people to set off fewer firecrackers during this year’s Spring Festival holiday.
Lots of parents agreed with Zhang Wei’s idea. They said that they hated the noise of firecrackers. The noise used to wake up their babies too early. The babies really needed quiet mornings,
More Chinese looked forward to celebrating the holiday in a greener way. They decided not to set off firecrackers. They also decided not to waste food. They said that the new celebrations sounded fashionable.
“My family didn’t buy any fireworks this year. Instead, we donated the money to charity. It’s good for the environment and charity as well.” Internet user “Fighter” wrote on Sina Weibo.

Birthdays are celebrated all over the world. Some ways to celebrate birthdays are rather similar from county to country---candles, cakes and birthday wishes. But there are also different ways to celebrate birthdays. Here are a few:
Denmark

A flag is flown outside a window to show that someone who lives in the house is having a birthday. Presents are placed around the child’s bed while he is sleeping so he will see them at once when he wakes up.

Usually Indian children wear white to school. However, on their birthdays, children wear colored clothes to school and give out chocolate to everyone in the class. Their best friends help them to do this.
Japan

The birthday child wears new clothes to mark the special time. Certain birthdays are more important than others. These are the third and seventh for girls and fifth for boys.

Chinese are very generous(慷慨的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the  money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children are short of self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and finish his job successfully step by step. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse(激發(fā)) his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I   16  love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good   17 for the team.
A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the   18 . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. He also said that three more people would be needed as backup(替補(bǔ)).  19 , four times that many students were at the meeting. So Mr. Gaudi said we would have a   20 and the top eight scorers(得分者) would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a   21 way to decide.
Yesterday, all of the hopefuls went to the dining hall after school. We would have to decide the starting line-up(陣容). Mr. Gaudi acted as the host. After a few hours, all the   22 on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition   23 the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.
Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(領(lǐng)先).  24 I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted   25 even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla   26 , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she   27 she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of   28 the show up close.
Was I cheating(欺騙) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t   29 it. It won’t hurt the team   30 Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.

Not everyone has a chance to be a detective(偵探), but I got one when I was 13 years old. It happened in 1994.
One afternoon, I was walking down the street when I saw my father’s new car. I expected(期望) to see my father in the driver’s seat. But to my surprise, I saw a young woman driving instead, “She has stolen my father’s car,” I thought. So I quickly stopped a taxi and got in. I said to the driver, “Follow that new car in front,” I told him why.
The taxi driver had a car phone, so I asked him to call the police. Soon we heard the sound of a police car. The police told the woman to stop the car using a loudspeaker. The taxi came to a stop, too. I got out right then and said to the woman, “This is not your car. It's my father’s car.”
The woman smiled and said, “Oh. You’re Mr. Johnson’s son, right? I've seen your photo in your father’s office.”
Before I could say one word, the woman explained that she was my father’s new assistant(助手). My father had asked her to take his computer to the shop to have it repaired. He lent her his car. 閱讀與回答問(wèn)題
Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn’t around? Of course, yes. Here’s our advice to you—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it seems everybody else already has his or her friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣賞) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say, “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help ---and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!
小題1:How do you feel when your best friend isn’t around you according to the passage?

小題2:Why do some kids feel lonely at break according to the writer?

小題3:What is the best way to make friends according to the writer?

小題4:Why do some kids need help from teachers to make friends according to the writer?

小題5:What should you do if you want to make more friends? (請(qǐng)自擬一句話作答)
