【題目】 Miss Wang, I'm sorry I'm late. I ________ to catch the early bus.

It doesn't matter. You'd better come to school earlier next time.

A.neededB.failedC.managedD.tried

Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most.

Here are the top 5 answers from our survey (調查): Scary movies and TV shows: Scary dreams; Thunderstorms, hurricanes(颶風); and other horrible weather War and terrorism (恐怖行動); Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else. Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear? Fear is a feeling that everyone has -- it’s programmed into all of us -- and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. Besides, it also makes us stronger. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches, he can tell himself, “Wait a minute. They’re only pretending things. I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark. A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed? Is that a thief I hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark. Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

【題目】 Do you mind sharing your test scores with others?

On May 16, Guo Ruiting , 14 from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, had a big debate (辯論) with her classmates on this topic.

Guo believed that making the scores public would make students study harder. At first, she explained many theories (理論) that she had collected on the Internet. But they were too difficult to understand. So she was easily beaten by her opponent (對方) Du Xiaoshe.

“Publishing the results of our tests is bad for us,” said Du. He came to this conclusion (結論) after he failed his history exam one month ago. He thought it was just an accident. But he felt so hurt when his parents got a list of his marks. It also showed the marks of other students in his class.

His experience seemed to have won over many students. But Guo’s team didn’t give up.

“Don’t you forget the time when we all worked harder after knowing the average mark of Class 2?” asked Guo. “We’d have never been so good if we didn’t know how far we were behind. So it’s good to know others’ marks,” said Guo.

These words encouraged Du. He partly agreed with Guo’s team. He thought it was good to show the average mark of each class but not individual (個人的) marks. This is the perfect way to respect their privacy (隱私) and make them work hard as well.
