A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.

Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands.Seawater is everywhere around the city.

Even so, travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go.People in Venice move from place to place by boat.

Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there’s nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it’s underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.

Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean melt. Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.

Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy’s biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.

【題目】The sixth sense

The "sixth sense" is often said to be a strong feeling that a person has about something or someone. Read about one mother's experience.

I had a feeling ...

Kathy Sansano arrived home from work two months ago at 7:00 in the evening. "Usually, my husband is home before me, but when I got in, his briefcase was there, but he wasn't," recalls Sansano. She just thought that he want to the store for something. Sansano began preparing dinner, but couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. "I just started feeling very anxious and had to sit down. Five minutes later my husband phoned to say that our son had been injured in a football game at school."

Luckily, the boy only had a broken wrist, but Sansano still can't explain how she knew something was wrong. "It might have been 'mother's intuition (直覺)'" she laughs. "My son and I have always been very close."

Science points out five basic senses that humans use to experience the world. There is now evidence that human may also own a sixth sense-or an intuition about people or events. Recent studies suggest that insects and animals release odorless(meaning "without any smells") chemicals into the environment to send signal emotions such as fear or aggression (侵略). When another creature of the same kind senses the chemical, certain behavior is caused in that creature; for example, it will prepare to fight or to protect itself.

Scientists believe that humans long ago may have communicated using these kinds of chemical signals. "I walked into the room, and something just didn't seem right." It may be that the person is sensing chemical messages that have been produced by others. Kathy Sansano's husband may have left the house feeling afraid and worried about their son. When Kathy got home, she sensed his worry.

Say the words ‘reality TV’ and the show that comes into most people’s minds is Big Brother. Love it or hate it, there have been versions ( 版本) in more than seventy countries! The basic format is simple: put a group of strangers into a house, record everything they do and watch how they manage to live together.

Actually the idea wasn’t original. A similar show, The Real World, was broadcast in 1992 on MTV. But the format really became popular with the success of Big Brother, and it has been copied again and again, including celebrity versions. In similar shows, contestants ( 參賽選手) have been sent to the jungle or a desert island. In Wife Swap a mother goes to live with a family of strangers and tries to manage their homes; in Young, Dumb and Living off Mum a group of spoilt ( 寵壞的) teenagers with no life skills learn to live together and look after themselves.

So what makes these shows so attractive? Actually, living with strangers is stressful and also personality problems are common. Contestants often have to share tasks and housework and this also brings conflict. “It’s all about relationships,” says TV critic ( 批評家) Jo Barnett. “Some characters are pleasant, and some are unpleasant, but they are all real people.”

But is it healthy to be so interested in other people’s private lives? And what kind of people want to appear in front of TV cameras twenty-four hours a day? Not everyone was in favour of such shows, including the first ever winner of Big Brother, Bart Spring. “I’m not a fan of the programme or of people becoming famous for being stupid.” he says.
