There’s always hope

I was sitting around the other morning thinking about some of my former(以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something about themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can _________about something else; anything you want.” I offered .He turned to me and shouted,” I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and __________ .He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him .And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his __________.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn’t ___________. The more he tried to do the things on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we_________ him.

But he wouldn’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling ___________ for acting out.

That __________me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something ;they hold the world responsible for the consequence(后果).

This story also had one of us turning Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t __________.I remember countless conversations, trying to understand them, going to his little League games.

It was Vincent who turned Vincent around , along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (驚嚇) him straight; talked him into going to __________.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years .And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different from 18 years ago. I couldn’t be happier for him.

And for me, the _________ is simple but powerful---there’s always hope.

Isaac Newton, the great British scientist, is often so deep in his thoughts that he will forget to eat his dinner.

One day his friend came to have dinner with him. Dinner was put on the table but Newton didn't come out of his study(書房). His friend sat down and waited for him. After waiting for quite a long time, he decided that Newton must be so deep in some new theory that he forgot all about the dinner. So he began to eat the chicken without Newton.

When he finished, he thought he would play a joke on his friend. He put all the chicken bones(骨頭)back on the dish and covered them with the dish over. Then he left Newton's house. He was quite certain that his joke would work.

Several hours later, Newton came out of his study, feeling very hungry. He saw the table was ready for dinner and so he sat down. When he lifted the cover and saw the bones of the chicken, he was greatly surprised. He turned, looked at the clock, and saw that it was long past his usual time for dinner.

"Well, well," he said to himself, "I thought I ate nothing, but I am wrong." He got up from table and went back to his study and began to work again.

Judge the following statements True (T) or False (F).

1.Newton comes from America.

2.Newton's friend didn't have dinner with him.

3.Newton's friend put all the chicken bones back on the dish.

4.Several days later, Newton came out of his study.
