【題目】 Thousands of years ago, people had to hunt for food. They lived in caves and needed fire to keep warm.1.

We don’t know why they drew the pictures. They had to go deep into the cave to do it , so they must have had a plan. They probably took a fire made of fat with them. 2. Others think the spears(長(zhǎng)矛) in the pictures mean they were teaching other people to hunt.

For paint, they mixed animal fat with some different things such as dirt or berries(漿果).3Some of the drawings are colorful and others are black from the burned end of a stick.

These people drew what they saw around them—animals such as buffaloes, deer, horses, and sometimes birds and fish4.

The pictures are quite good. The buffaloes look strong and powerful. Many of the horses and deer look beautiful.

These drawings have been found in more than 130 caves ----mostly in England and France5. It is interesting to look at such old drawings.

A. They drew people, but no very often.

B. Maybe there are more that we haven’t found yet.

【題目】Answer the question (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題)

“It’s time to wake up, Emily,” my mom sings from the kitchen. I pretended to open my eyes. Why didn’t the alarm on my cellphone ring?

Soon, I realized it was April 8, the day for my program : “A day without technology.”I didn’t realize what I had gotten myself into until I was driving to school in my car. No radio blasting my favorite songs. I had to sing to myself.

As soon as I got to school, I went to the library to print out my English project from my flash drive. “Uh-oh,” I thought. “This isn’t expected.” Finally,I had to spend nearly an hour writing the report again.

The school day went on and I finally got used to the rules. This wasn’t so hard! I could do this every day.

I drove home in silence again, and my mind eventually went into after-school mode (模式),depending on what I would eat for supper and who would be voted off (被淘汰出局)American Idol later that night. The last thing I knew, I was chat with friends on Facebook, check email and watch a video on YouTube, all at the same time!

My mom walked in and her jaw dropped.

“What happened to nohomework?” she asked me. I froze for the second time that day and ordered myself to go back to reality. I had failed.

This experiment, which many teenagers would never have the courage to try, was actually convenient to me.Even though my attempt(嘗試) at going about my day without these luxuries (奢侈品) was a failure, I realized that if I really tried,I would be completely successful without my addiction to technology.

These devices suddenly make my life easier, and I’m sure I wouldn’t practice getting rid of them altogether, but I do believe the lives of today’s teenagers would be dramatically different without our tech dependence.

【題目】 Only a few Europeans lived in North America in the 16th century. Most of them settled (定居) on the northeast coast. In 1587, a small group of about 100 people decided to go south. They moved to the small island of Roanoke. That area later became part of the state of North Carolina.

Unfortunately, the Roanoke settlers weren’t well prepared. They didn’t have enough food for the winter, and there wasn’t enough grain for future crops. Their leader, Captain White, decided to sail back to England to get supplies. However, there was a war in Europe, and three years passed before he returned to North America.

When Captain White came back to Roanoke in 1590, he was eager to see the settlers. He looked out from his ship, but no one was there to meet him. There were no signs of life. The settlement was empty.

No one knows why the Roanoke settlers disappeared. Many people thought that hostile Native Americans killed them, but there were no signs of a fight. Some thought that the settlers died from hunger or disease, but they couldn’t explain the absence of bodies.

Many years later, more settlers came to North Carolina. One of them met a Native American group called the Lumbee. They were unusual looking compared to the black-haired, brown-eyed Native Americans in the north. Some Lumbee had blonde hair and gray eyes. Then he listened to their speech and almost fell off his horse. They seemed to speak an unusual kind of English.

He asked where they were from. None of them knew, but they said that their grandparents “talked from a book.” Did they mean that their grandparents were able to read? As he rode back home, he asked himself a question: Were the Lumbee people the descendants(后裔)of the Roanoke settlers?

People are still asking the same question. Because there are no written records, we can’t be certain. However, there is one interesting fact. Today, some of the Lumbee people have names like Sampson, Dare, and Cooper. They are the same as the names of the vanished settlers of Roanoke Island.

1Captain White returned to Roanoke after three years because ______________.

A.there was a war in Europe.B.they didn’t have enough food.

C.there were no signs of life in the settlement.D.the area became part of the state of North Carolina.

2According to the following signs EXCEPT ___________, the Lumbee may be the descendants of the Roanoke settlers.

A.They had the same names as the disappeared settlers

B.They seemed to speak an unusual kind of English.

C.Their grandparents might be able to read.

D.They had black hair and brown eyes.

3What does the underlined word hostile in paragraph 4 mean?

A.braveB.strongC.unfriendlyD.unlucky

4According to the fifth paragraph, why did one of the settlers almost fall off his horse?

A.Because some Lumbee’s looking was so unusual that it frightened him.

B.Because some Lumbee spoke an unusual English just like the disappeared settlers.

C.Because some Lumbee’s English was so unusual that he couldn’t understand them.

D.Because the Lumbee told him that they were the descendants of the Roanoke settlers.

5What’s the best title of the passage?

A.The brave EuropeansB.The unusual Lumbee
